Greetings!
Spring is a great time of year - warmer weather, longer daylight hours and spring cleaning! If you are cleaning your home or office we encourage you to donate reusable items to our ReStores. Spring is also a popular season for awards and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (HFH GLA) was very honored to receive an Affiliates of Distinction award from Habitat for Humanity International at the recent HFH National Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Thank you to all of our supporters for making the work we do possible and please continue to join us by volunteering and advocating!
|
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF GREATER L.A. NAMED AN AFFILIATE OF DISTINCTION
|
We were recently selected as one of seven "Affiliates of Distinction" by Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI). HFHI recognized our affiliate's leadership in seven areas: sustainable and green building, overall organizational leadership, community development, financial sustainability, alignment with Habitat for Humanity's strategic plan, effective use of technology for communication and support for Habitat's global mission. Read the press release HERE and watch a video with Erin Rank, HFH GLA's president and CEO, HERE.
Eighteen members of our staff were fortunate to attend the 2013 HFH National Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, where we were presented with the inaugural award. In addition to receiving the award, our staff also enjoyed a great week of learning, networking and meeting our colleagues from around the world.
|
COLLEGIATE CHALLENGE
| |
This year students from four universities spent their spring break volunteering with us at HFH GLA. The groups had the opportunity to experience different aspects of our affiliate by working in the ReStores, building on site and having dinner with our partner homeowners - the Miramontes and Sanchez families! The students were also treated to delicious lunches from Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles, Jersey Mike's Subs, El Pollo Loco and In-N-Out Burger. Please take a moment to meet a few of our Collegiate Challenge students from Carroll College, Minnesota State University, Arizona State University and University of Minnesota.

ACT! SPEAK! BUILD! WEEK
| |
Act! Speak! Build! Week is an exciting week of advocacy, initiated by students, taking place March 31 - April 6. Students from the University of Southern California and King Drew High School will raise awareness for affordable housing development and funding with screenings of the award-winning documentary, "The Pruitt-Igoe Myth". Other activities that local youth will be participating in include a postcard campaign for the California Homes & Jobs Act, submitting a creative arts activity, meeting with a local legislator and participating in public comment at a local city council. Find out more HERE.

PALOS VERDES RIDE FOR HFH | |
HFH GLA is gearing up for the 2nd Annual Palos Verdes Ride for Habitat for Humanity on Saturday, April 6. We are very excited to have Denise Dador, ABC7 Eyewitness News Health specialist, as our Master of Ceremonies and Dotsie Bausch, 2012 Olympic Silver Medalist in Cycling, riding with us! There are three spectacular routes to choose from, which all begin and end at Terranea. Expert and intermediate riders are encouraged to pedal for a purpose and join us on April 6! Watch a short video of Bausch HERE.
For more information and to register to ride, click HERE.
|
THANK YOU TO THE PRESBYTERIAN COALITION!
| |
The Presbyterian Coalition currently consists of 20 churches located throughout HFH GLA's service area. Over the last three years, the coalition has raised nearly $150,000 for Habitat projects, as well as rallied hundreds of volunteers to build and renovate homes. We recently celebrated the completion of the Ramirez family home, which would not have been possible without the Presbyterian Coalition and their generous support.
