NEWSLETTER
DECEMBER 2012

Greetings!

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (HFH GLA) has had a very busy 2012, building and renovating homes, celebrating partner homeowners and engaging the community.  We thank each and every one of you for helping us build hope and homes. We wish you a safe, happy and healthy holiday season and a very prosperous New Year!

THRIVENT FINANCIAL COMPLETES HOME #7

Lutheran congregations throughout greater Los Angeles joined forces in Lynwood earlier this year to break ground on the seventh HFH GLA home sponsored  by Thrivent Financial.  On December 1, 2012 this new Habitat for Humanity home was dedicated for the Luna family (below).

 Yadira and Joseph Luna

The multi-year, multi-million dollar partnership between Thrivent and Habitat for Humanity has raised $160 million and built more than 1,600 affordable homes around the world.  L.A. area Lutherans have built a single-family home every year for the past seven years.

In 2013, Thrivent Financial and local Lutheran Churches will be sponsoring their 8th HFH GLA home in greater Los Angeles.  Thrivent's commitment to affordable housing is helping to uplift congregations, communities, and individuals here in Los Angeles and around the world.  Thank you Thrivent!

2ND DELTA AIR LINES DEDICATION

On Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012 HFH GLA and Delta Air Lines had another amazing house dedication on Lemon Ave. in Long Beach for the Ulloa family.  More than 80 Delta executives and employees, Long Beach city officials and HFH GLA staff were on site for the dedication and nearly 500 Delta employees participated in the six week build

This is the second HFH GLA home sponsored by Delta Air Lines and it was fully funded by their In-Flight Recycling Program.  Delta is an amazing partner and we look forward to building house #3.

FIVE TIPS FOR END OF THE YEAR GIVING

Most people make charitable gifts toward the end of the year, and do so without much planning. Your gift does make a difference in the lives of the individuals and families served by HFH GLA. This year you might consider how the following suggestions might benefit you as you plan to help others.

  1. Estimate your income and tax liability before Dec. 31.
  2. Consider using non-cash assets. Look at the stocks you have held for more than a year, especially those you have held for a long periods of time. For more information visit: http://habitatla.plannedgiving.org/habitatla/articles/13.html
  3. Consider making a gift that pays income back to you. HFH GLA offers a variety of life-income plans to fit your needs. For additional information go to: http://habitatla.plannedgiving.org/habitatla/articles/2.html
  4. If you are over 70 years of age, consider making a gift by directly transferring assets held in an IRA account to HFH GLA. You may be able to make a larger gift than you think is possible. For more information about Bequests from retirement plans, visit: http://habitatla.plannedgiving.org/habitatla/articles/11.html
  5. Talk to your advisor. Before making any significant gift, you should have your CPA, attorney or other advisor help you to plan and understand the impact of the gift on your income tax return and to your estate.

Take the time to do some planning in the weeks ahead. For more information about how you can personally benefit from making a gift to HFH GLA, contact Jennifer M. Wise, Vice President of Resource Development, HFH GLA, 17700 S. Figueroa Street, Gardena, CA 90248; Direct: (424) 246-3627, [email protected].
