Participate in Earth Hour
Saturday, March 29th


The City of Evanston invites residents and businesses to participate in Earth Hour on Saturday, March 29 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. by switching off non-essential lights and electronic appliances.

Sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Earth Hour is a global event in which hundreds of millions of participants across all seven continents unite and celebrate a commitment to protect the planet by powering down for one hour.  

 

The City will observe Earth Hour by eliminating non-essential electrical functions, as well as encouraging City staff to observe the event at their homes. Community members are encouraged to share their plans and ideas for Earth Hour on social media using the hashtag

 

 

Open Call for Construction Job Opportunities

The City will host an open call for candidates interested in the Workforce Development Program on Sat., March 29, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Parasol Room of the Morton Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave.

The program will help connect Evanston residents with employment and apprenticeship opportunities on Northwestern University construction projects. See event details and program requirements

 

 

"Give Back Evanston" Volunteer Event

On Wed., April 2, volunteers of all ages and abilities are encouraged to celebrate District 65's early dismissal with the "Give Back Evanston" volunteer event at Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center, 1655 Foster St., from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Parents are encouraged to bring their children to participate in a meaningful afternoon of service projects benefiting Evanston-based organizations. Donations of toothbrushes, toilet paper and full-size tubes of toothpaste will also be accepted to benefit those served by the YWCA Evanston/North Shore and Connections for the Homeless. Register online to volunteer and donate

Preschool Dance Party Celebrates Early Childhood Learning at EPL

Preschoolers (with their caregivers) are invited to learn and dance at the Evanston Public Library on Thursday, April 3 from 10-11AM to celebrate the Week of the Young Child. Marilyn Price, an internationally known puppeteer will entertain with her Wee Wonderful World of Puppets. Singing, nursery rhymes, the creation of a friendship wreath that celebrates diversity, and dancing will be part of the program. 

 

 

Todoroki Hibachi + Sushi Holds 2014 Annual Sushi-Eating Contest  

Sunday, April 6

 

Todoroki will be hosting its annual sushi-eating contest on Sunday, April 6th at 4:30pm. All of Evanston is invited to participate! There is no entry fee to participate. There will be two competitions, one all-male and one all-female competition.

 

Contest participants will be chosen the day of through a lottery system (10 males and 10 females will be chosen for two separate competitions). The winners of each competition will win free All-You-Can-Eat sushi once a week throughout the weeks of 4/7-6/15.

Record Store Day at Vintage Vinyl

April 19th  is International Record Store Day! International Record Store Day was started six years ago to create an awareness that there are physical locations around the globe where music lovers can go to hear, meet and purchase, etc. Every major artist and record company participates by releasing unique and very limited items that are only available on THAT DAY!

 

Enjoy artists performing live at Vintage Vinyl, while music lovers from all over, convene and try to collect as many of the limited records available.

Traveling Smithsonian Exhibit to visit the Evanston Public Library

April 1 - 27 

 

BraceroThe Smithsonian traveling exhibit "Bittersweet Harvest: The Bracero Program, 1942-1964," which documents Mexican temporary laborers in the United States, will be on display at the Evanston Public Library from April 1 to April 27. The exhibit describes the experiences of bracero workers and their families, and provides context for today's debates on immigration and guest worker programs.

 

 

 

Emerson-Ridge-Green Bay Improvements Project - Open House

Wednesday, April 2nd  

 

The City of Evanston will host an open house to initiate the planning and the public involvement for improvements for the Emerson Street / Ridge Avenue / Green Bay Road intersection including Green Bay Road south of McCormick Blvd, Ridge Avenue between Dempster Street and Simpson Street, and Emerson Street between Benson Avenue and Asbury Avenue. Attend a meeting at the Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center on Wednesday, April 2nd from 7-9pm. 

 

The purpose of the meeting is to present the current condition, the need and the purpose for the improvement and to obtain public input.

Enter the Poetry Competition at the Evanston Public Library

The Evanston Public Library is pleased to announce the annual poetry competition funded by an endowment to the Library in memory of Jo-Anne Hirshfield. The Jo-Anne Hirshfield Memorial Poetry Awards competition is open to all students, kindergarten through the eighth grade, attending an Evanston elementary or middle school or residing in Evanston, and all high school students and adults in the Chicago area. Evanston Chamber of Commerce35th Fountain Square Art Festival Offers 
Booth Discount to Local Artists

 

Calling all local artists! The Evanston Chamber of Commerce 35th annual Fountain Square Art Festival, is offering a special discount for local artists for this year's event in downtown Evanston. Fest dates are Saturday and Sunday, June 28-29, 10:00 a.m.- 6:00 p.m.

 

The sprawling art extravaganza is held at the intersections of Sherman and Church Streets, just steps from the eponymous Fountain Square. It's the North Shore's oldest juried fine arts fair. Over the weekend it attracts more than 40,000 visitors.

 

Artists who reside in Evanston and neighboring Skokie, Lincolnwood and Wilmette will receive a special 25 percent discount for a 10 x 10 foot booth for the weekend (The discounted cost is $300 versus the regular $400.
