First Northern Credit Union will be holding two free educational seminars covering the topic of, "Understanding Your Credit Report" on April 9, 2014. Register for W.O.W. 2014! WOW

Women Out Walking (W.O.W.) is a 12 week walking program designed to encourage women in Evanston to lead healthier lifestyles and become more physically active. Using walking as the foundation, individuals and teams of women are asked to track their steps and seek to improve their activity level on a weekly basis. Registration for WOW is now open. Participants are encouraged to register before the March 22, 2014 Kick-Off Event.

 The Center for Economic Progress will be offering free tax counseling and preparation for families with incomes less than $50,000 and individuals with incomes less than $25,000. Enter the Poetry Competition at the Evanston Public Library

The Evanston Public Library is pleased to announce the annual poetry competition funded by an endowment to the Library in memory of Jo-Anne Hirshfield. The Jo-Anne Hirshfield Memorial Poetry Awards competition is open to all students, kindergarten through the eighth grade, attending an Evanston elementary or middle school or residing in Evanston, and all high school students and adults in the Chicago area. This year's guest judge will be Kevin Stein. For award categories and prizes, visit here! --the entry deadline is Friday, March 28, 2014.

Evanston Dance Ensemble presents The Big Night

Opening March 14th  

 

Evanston Dance Ensemble's March 2014 production of The Big Night, features the delightful mini-ballet Graduation Ball in the first act. The second act moves the teen social dance ritual into the 21st century with Prom 2014. And as usual, there will be something for every dance lover of any age in this one.  

 

Evanston Dance Ensemble will be presenting 5 performances of The Big Night March 14-16 at the Josephine Louis Theatre on Northwestern University's campus.  

  

 

Evanston Symphony Orchestra - Hungarian Connection

March 16th, 2:30pm

Franz Liszt's "Totentanz" (Dance of Death) is unsurpassed for virtuoso excitement, and the young Russian pianist Gleb Ivanov will take on this challenging role. Another Hungarian composer, Bela Bartok, frequently performed the "Totentanz," and our concert opens with his exciting Dance Suite. The Hungarian language is unrelated to those surrounding Hungary, but it does share a strong connection with Finnish. The Evanston Symphony Orchestra, led by Music Director Lawrence Eckerling, closes this concert with the most popular symphony of Finland's most important composer - the rousingly patriotic Second Symphony by Jean Sibelius. Community Open House at the Frances Willard House

The Community Open House at 1730 Chicago Ave. is the first of a year-long series of events honoring one of Evanston's most famous citizens during the 175th anniversary of her birth. This event is free and open to the public. Guests will have the opportunity to view the home on their own, while short guided tours will be given at 1:00, 2:00 and 3:00. Beverages and sweets will be served. Free lapel buttons featuring the FrancesWillard@175 logo will be given out and visitors will have an opportunity to purchase a special edition of Willard's Book How I Learned to Ride the Bicycle.



Mayor's Summer Youth Employment Program Seminar and Social
March 25th, 6pm

The City of Evanston Human Relations Commission, in partnership with the Mayor's Summer Youth Employment Program, will host the "Hire One Youth" informational and social at Starbucks on 1734 Sherman Avenue. Since 1992, Mayor's Summer Youth Employment Program (MSYEP) has provided skills and workforce opportunities to thousands of Evanston youth ages 14-18. Last year, MSYEP employed over 300 Evanston youth and with a goal of employing 500 Evanston youth, it is more important than ever that the business community support the Mayor's efforts. So please join the Human Relations Commission for a beverage, a sampling of food and an opportunity to learn more about MSYEP.
