Artist/owner Katherine Borg will be on hand to talk about her work and demonstrate Chinese brush painting techniques. First Northern Credit Union Grand Opening!

First Northern Credit Union formally welcomes Evanston residents and employees to its new branch for a grand opening celebration. The team at 1705 Sherman Avenue will provide refreshments and special offers to those who visit the branch the week of February 3, 2014. The official ribbon cutting ceremony will take place Thursday, February 6 at 2:30 pm. 

 

The new location offers an expanded staff to meet the needs of First Northern's growing membership base, two 24-hour Co-Op Network ATMs that will allow shared branch deposits, larger service space, and a community room that is available for groups and city residents. 

 

 

Enter the Poetry Competition at the Evanston Public Library

The Evanston Public Library is pleased to announce the annual poetry competition funded by an endowment to the Library in memory of Jo-Anne Hirshfield. The Jo-Anne Hirshfield Memorial Poetry Awards competition is open to all students, kindergarten through the eighth grade, attending an Evanston elementary or middle school or residing in Evanston, and all high school students and adults in the Chicago area. This year's guest judge will be Kevin Stein. For award categories and prizes, visit here! --the entry deadline is Friday, March 28, 2014.

 

 

The Evanston Art Center launches it's first Artist-In-Residence program - "The Living Studio" 

 

The Evanston Art Center welcomes artist Ben Whitehouse to the Living Studio work space from January 6 - April 13, 2014! The Living Studio will be an ongoing residency program with a second artist to be selected in the spring of 2014 for a late summer / fall engagement period. Interested individuals are encouraged to join us for the following Sunday afternoon open Living Studio session: Sunday, February 9 from 1 to 4pm, when you can stop in and see what Ben is working on. On Sunday, April 6 Ben will give a more formal gallery talk. All of these sessions are free and open to the public. Additionally, Ben will be conducting a workshop on Saturday, March 22 from noon to 4pm. Please watch EAC's web site for further details on this special workshop: www.evanstonartcenter.org.

"Inequality for All" screening

Join us for a screening and discussion of former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich's documentary on American income inequality. Reich, a professor of public policy at U. C. Berkeley, suggests that massive consolidation of wealth by the few threatens the viability of the American workforce and the foundation of American democracy.
