CTA will begin Purple Line Track Renewal in May 2013

Chicago Transit Authority will begin work to replace the Purple Line track ties in May 2013. Work will occur at nighttime for five days and daytime weekend work. The work will last for approximately seven months.

The project work on the Purple Line in the City of Evanston is designed to help remediate slow zones along the line. It will replace over 6,000 railroad ties that are beyond their useful life and extend the life of the line until permanent funding is secured for full Red & Purple Line Modernization. This will be the first major upgrade to the Purple Line railroad ties since 1976.

The ultimate goal of the project is to speed up service for riders by eliminating slow zones on the Purple Line. The replacement work will be done by CTA staff and will begin in south Evanston and continue to the north.

For questions regarding this project, please contact the City of Evanston Intergovernmental Affairs Coordinator Matt Swentkofske at 3-1-1 or at mswentkofske@cityofevanston.org or CTA Senior Government Officer Ryan Mouw at rmouw@transitchicago.com or visit here.

City to test single traffic Lane on Davis - May 13

As part of a test phase leading up to the Davis Street Streetscape project scheduled to take place later this summer, the City of Evanston will put up temporary test pavement markings for a bike path at the curb on the north side of the 500 block of Davis St., moving the car parking lane away from the curb on that side and temporarily reducing traffic from two lanes to one lane. The test will start May 13 and run for about two weeks. This test may offer a solution to a previous proposal which would have eliminated diagonal parking on the south side of the street to make room for a protected bike lane.
