A Note From our October Conductor,
Phil Neuman
Rain? You'll have to refresh my memory. No matter the weather, bring recorders, viols, cornamusen, krummhorns, douçaines and racketts to the next PRS playing session on October 19th and play some fabulous rarely performed works by Phinot, Trofeo, Byrd, and Luzzaschi.
We'll get a head start on Halloween by playing Robert Johnson's lively dance "The Witch" from Ben Jonson's masque entitled "Queens." The stage directions for this dance include the making of "a confused noise with strange gestures." I'll also bring another all-time favorite masque dance, "My Ladi Wraths Mascharada" by William Brade.
Next is William Byrd's "Who made thee, Hob" which is scored for 6 instruments, with two of the parts also intended for voices - anybody who would like to try singing is more than welcome - the range is d' to d" for soprano, and would also work in the tenor range. Then I'll bring Luzzasco Luzzaschi's wonderful madrigal "Quand'io miro me stessa," with parts that work well on reeds, strings, and recorders.
Next I'll have two 8 part pieces: Ruggier Trofeo's unusual "Canzon 19," and Dominique Phinot's beautiful "A dieu, Loyse." Then, in order to really mix it up, we'll have fun with Benny Goodman's swing classic "Stompin' at the Savoy."
It should be a memorable session, and I'm looking forward to seeing you there!

Vote on Snacks!
|
The results of our poll at the September session revealed that folks are not so excited about having snacks available after we play. That's ok! We''ll take a break from the nagging and revisit the question again next year. And if anyone is so inspired to bring something to share...we won't turn you away!

Musica Maestrale presents:
Mis descuidados ojos ~ My Careless Eyes
Three centuries of Spanish song
Saturday, November 3rd, 2012
7:30 p.m. ...y ahora, una cosa completamente diferente! Musica Maestrale's first season continues with something completely different: a concert of Spanish songs! This time, we will be joined by Oregon's own Amy Hansen, soprano extraordinaire. During her illustrious career, Amy has sung with National Philharmonic and the National Symphony Orchestra, Vermont Symphony, Oregon Symphony, Eugene Symphony, Brooklyn Philharmonic, Opera Orchestra of New York, Taiwan National Theater, Teatro di Urbania, Calgary Opera, Edmonton Opera, Michigan Opera, and Portland Opera among others. The program covers three centuries of Spanish song, from the Renaissance, through Baroque, and finishing in Classical. Enchanting, whimsical, and evocative, this music is heavily influenced by folkloric dance rhythms and Moorish melodies. Amy will be accompanied by Hideki Yamaya on vihuela, Baroque guitar, and 19th-century guitar (an original instrument from the mid-1800's), who will also play solos on each instrument. Community Music Center 3350 SE Francis St Portland, Or. 97202 General, $14; Student/Senior $12, online or at the door BUY TICKETS HERE
