In December, researchers in London announced the long-awaited final results of the United Kingdom Collaborative Trial of Ovarian Cancer Screening (UKCTOCS). Results of the trial, published in the British journal The Lancet, showed that average-risk, post-menopausal women who were screened for ovarian cancer based on a test called ROCA (Risk of Ovarian Cancer Algorithm) were not less likely to die from ovarian cancer than women who were not screened. This year, 18 scientists at top medical institutions across the country will pursue their promising research projects thanks to help from an OCRF grant. Over the next few months, we'll introduce you to all of these grantees, along with a simplified overview of their research projects, in our new weekly "Meet an OCRF Researcher" Facebook series. Dr. Beth Karlan, of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, is first in the series. Dr. Karlan's research focuses on better understanding the co-dependence between ovarian cancer cells and tumor stroma, which can be thought of as scaffolding that is crucial for tumor development and growth. "The work will examine novel approaches to attack the interplay between ovarian cancer cells and the tumor's stroma," says Dr. Karlan. "In this way, new targets and approaches to halting tumor growth and preventing recurrence may be revealed."

Jamie Twedt of Colorado has a motto: "Knowledge is power." After learning she had a BRCA gene mutation, which made her more susceptible to developing ovarian and breast cancer, she resolved to share the importance of knowing personal risk with as many women as possible, and to support further research by raising funds for OCRF. To date, she's raised more than $30,000 through her campaign, and will take on her fourth Ironman this November in Colorado.
Despite a successful campaign, she has no intention of hanging up her wetsuit any time soon. "My ultimate goal is to keep raising money until a cure is found."
