OCRF Research Shows Glycans Can Identify Ovarian Cancer
OCRF-funded research has verified that glycans - sugars attached to proteins - can be used to identify ovarian cancer. OCRF grantee Gary Leiserowitz, M.D., chief of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at UC Davis, is a senior author on the study, which was published online in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. For more information, please click here.

OCRF News
Early this week, OCRF and QVC announced four new Woman to Woman grant recipients: Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island, Providence, RI; Tulane Cancer Center, New Orleans, LA; Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX; and Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY. These new sites are part of the program's national expansion efforts which launched in 2012 when QVC united with OCRF, for a three-year $1 million commitment to grow the program. Woman to Woman is OCRF's signature patient support program that pairs gynecologic cancer patients with trained and supervised survivor volunteers, who provide one-on-one emotional support and mentoring.

OCRF is now accepting applications from medical institutions for one-year $50,000 Woman to Woman program grants. The deadline for submission is May 1, 2014. Click here for the complete application guidelines. For questions about Woman to Woman, please email Julia Volpin at womantowoman@ocrf.org.

On November 8 - 10th, hockey team Slayer, of Westford, Massachusetts, took on opponents in the Shuley Cup charity tournament in support of Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. The tournament, which was founded in 2009 by Shuley Nakamura, takes place every year, with participating teams representing a cause of their choice. Ron Swinnich, captain of Team Slayer, chose to support OCRF in honor of a dear friend, Sue Henderson, who passed away in September 2013 from ovarian cancer. Thanks to the generosity of team Slayer and their supporters, $4,315 was donated to OCRF in Sue's memory.

In February, the women's tennis team at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut, held an Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day to raise funds for research and spread the word about ovarian cancer. On the day of the match, the Pioneers wore special ovarian cancer awareness shirts, also selling shirts to their supporters for a donation to OCRF. Through sales of the shirts, the team raised $300 for OCRF, in memory of sophomore Paige Olson's grandmother, Phyllis Skovran, who passed away from ovarian cancer in September.
