August 2013
TopGreetings!

September means back to school and National Recovery Month. We're excited to be involved with the 4th annual Walk for Recovery in Portland this year. In addition, we'll be starting up a new therapy group for women who are living with chronic pain.

Don't forget to purchase your tickets to the Crossroads Masquerade Ball. October is just around the corner! We just revealed some of the amazing auction items up for grabs, including a private concert from Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul and Mary and personalized voice mail recordings from Stephen King and Comedian Bob Marley! Check out the event page for details and to reserve your tickets.

According to a recent article on Huffington Post18 women die of a prescription drug overdose in the U.S every day. That's five times more than 10 years ago.

Prescription painkillers are a drug of choice among women today partly because women are more likely to suffer from chronic pain. In addition, women are more often prescribed painkillers and for longer periods of time than men. Studies show that women are 50% more likely than men to leave their doctor's office with a prescription, even if they have the same condition.

Crossroads is starting an 8-week therapy group on September 10th for women who live with chronic pain. Living with Chronic Pain will help group members develop greater insight into how thoughts, feelings and behaviors affect the perception and experience of pain. Participants will also learn about the biological bases of chronic pain and what this means for pain management. Group members can reflect and gain support from one another, as well as practice relaxation and distraction techniques in order to better manage their pain.

Living with Chronic Pain will meet on Tuesdays from 1:00pm - 2:30pm at Kennebunk Counseling Center. For more information or to join the group, call 207.467.3369
