| JUNE IS WATER SAFETY MONTH | | |
Summertime means pool time for many kids and adults as they venture to their favorite spots to swim, play and create lasting memories. Whether it's the pool, beach, water park or lakefront keep safety first when in or around the water. Our YMCA offers a variety of programs for children and adults including aquacise classes, open family swim, swim lessons, and competitive swim team.
When in and around water follow the safety precautions for children and adults:
- Only swim when and where there is lifeguard on duty.
- Never swim alone.
- Adults should constantly watch children in and near the water. If multiple adults are in the vicinity, designate a "water watcher" so everyone knows who is "on duty."
- Inexperienced swimmers should take precautions and wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal floatation device (PFD) when in or near the water.
- Children who are beginners should stay within arm's reach of an adult in the water.

| SUMMER DAY CAMP | | |
The summer break is fast approaching. While some kids and teens may prefer to spend their summer vacation playing video games or watching television, the Newport News Family YMCA reminds parents of the value of enrolling their child in YMCA Summer Camp.
At the Y, youth are safe and cared for, and they have experiences that they don't typically get at home or school. At camp, kids become part of a camp community that helps them to build life-long friendships and create lasting memories.
Camping experts say that summer camp can make a meaningful impact on youth in several ways:
- Youth experience supervisxed "unstructured" playtime that they normally don't have at home or school, thus learning how to become independent, make smart choices, solve problems and work with others.
- The experience of trying and learning new things, including adventurous outdoor activities, gives youth confidence and helps them develop healthy life-long habits.
- As fewer youth spend time outdoors, camp gets them outside, leading them to develop an awareness and appreciation for nature.
- At camp, youth are given guidance and feel part of a community, allowing them to feel confortable, being themselves without judgement.
- Youth learn from other campers and counselors, and make new friends to share it all with.
