So, one thing we do here at KT is read... a lot. It helps with our training. You'll notice we write a bit too. But, last month, Donna came across this excellent Health Data Management article and shared it with us. I read it and was excited. It covers so many interesting topics. But we agreed that it was a bit long to post if you are not into the same intense reading as some may be. Although this was written up in a medical journal, many of you, our clients, work in some type of compliance environment. Whether you are in medical or not, much of what is highlighted in this article are simple 'best business' practices. For instance, what levels of privacy are you held to? I mean, even a retail establishment has payment information on file somewhere. I know we are constantly talking HIPAA, Healthcare is held to very stringent guidelines that we must adhere to. The Eyes and Ears at the Office Question: Why can't I find a new computer with Windows 7 anywhere? Answer: Well, I really can't answer that. Apparently, it appears Microsoft has said it's time is up. However, what I can tell you is that there is a way to order or purchase a unit with the Windows 8 OS and downgrade it to 7. I like the beauty of networking! 2014 Begins in October... of THIS Year.
What's the Benefit of That?
Before I even begin, I wanted to ask you if you knew when 2014 started. January? If you have time off. like many before the new year, could it be as early as late December when you say you're done with 2013? What about October 1st?
So, I knew that OCR planned on putting the final touches for their permanent 2014 audit plan. Did you know that the fiscal year for the HHS Office for Civil Rights starts October 1st?! Is it Really Just that Simple?
"The organization... would be doing this work even if audits were not on the horizon, because it's simply the right thing to do, asserts Jonathan Everett, Director of Information Technology at the Independent Practice Association of Chinese Community."
I can't say how much I love this line, this reasoning. It's true, accurate. Remove the fact the audits he is referring to involve fines and penalties. Whether or not your industry is mandated by similar compliance guidelines really shouldn't matter. Why is security simply the right thing to do?
