Technology at it's Best!

Kardon Tech

Greetings!

So, one thing we do here at KT is read... a lot.  It helps with our training.  You'll notice we write a bit too.  But, last month, Donna came across this excellent Health Data Management article and shared it with us.  I read it and was excited.  It covers so many interesting topics.  But we agreed that it was a bit long to post if you are not into the same intense reading as some may be.

So, I'm breaking it up and adding our spin.  Now, although most of what we write comes from what's happening, and industry discussions and topics from print.  But this month, I am really pulling from this article.  It really was that good!

Now whether you are in medical or not, much of what is highlighted in this article are simple 'best business' practices.  For instance, what levels of privacy are you held to?  I mean, even a retail establishment has payment information on file somewhere.

I know we are constantly talking HIPAA,  But, remember.  We are looking out for your best interest.  Happy reading!

Sincerely,

Brian G. Wilson

Ask Chantz
The Eyes and Ears at the Office

Question:  Why can't I find a new computer with Windows 7 anywhere?

Answer:  Well, I really can't answer that.  Apparently, it appears Microsoft has said it's time is up.

However, what I can tell you is that there is a way to order or purchase a new unit with the Windows 8 Operating System and downgrade it to 7.

Why are we talking about Windows 7 and 8?  Because many of you will be buying new computers soon.  You see, Windows XP needs to go.  It's old folks!  And it will no longer be supported...

What Does OCR Want?
And They Want it When?

Before I even begin, I wanted to ask you if you knew when 2014 started.  January?  If you have time off, like many before the new year, could it be as early as late December when you say you're done with 2013?  What about October 1st?

So, I knew that OCR planned on putting the final touches for their permanent 2014 audit plan.  Did you know that the fiscal year for the HHS Office for Civil Rights starts October 1st?!  That's definitely a different 2014 than what I was thinking.  You?...

The Right Thing to Do
Is it Really Just That Simple

"The organization... would be doing this work even if audits were not on the horizon, because it's simply the right thing to do, asserts Jonathan Everett, director of information technology at the Independent Practice Association of Chinese Community."

I can't say how much I love this line, this reasoning.  It's true, accurate.  Remove the fear-mongering.  OCR, fines, HHS, audits, penalties, 'the law' and so on.  It really shouldn't matter.  Why is HIPAA simply the right thing to do?
Book of Evidence
So, I Keep Hearing About this BOE

Mark Dill, Director of Information Security at Cleveland Clinic said "Creating a Book of Evidence on an organization's compliance with HIPAA privacy, security and breach rules is not difficult, only takes a couple of weeks..."  What?  Stop laughing.  Get off the floor, it's not that funny.  Yeah, I know.  That was my impression also.

Who is your Director of Information Security?  Oh.  You?  And the Practice Administrator?  You?  And HR, and training, and...  I see...
