                | | Greetings!     In the January newsletter, I made reference to the Final Rule.  That may be all I said.  No, I'm sure of it (I looked back).  If you work in or with the medical industry, you should have had an idea what I was referencing.  If you don't, however, you still should.
Nearly every one of us visits a doctor's or dentist's office, either occasionally or on a regular basis.  Some of us have been admitted to a hospital.  Some participate in trial studies.  Well, the Final Rule, HIPAA and HITECH are all related to privacy and security.  YOUR privacy and security.

A single medical record is worth much more than a credit file.  Unbelievable?  Think.  Your credit card or banking information MAY be on your medical record; along with, among other things, your address, social security number, prescriptions and insurance information.  Each has a value of its own.

Reading most of what we publish in our newsletter, our posts and blogs, you know that security is an extremely important topic to Kardon Technology.  So we work with medical professionals to protect your information.  Enjoy the articles below!

 Sincerely,

 Brian G. Wilson

 Ask Chantz
The Eyes and Ears at the Office Question:  How can I keep up on all of this?   Answer: Really?!  Well, O.K.  Just below, there are two boxes full of Kardon Tech forums, for the lack of a better term.

I keep hearing about this Social Media explosion.  Well, the team tries to reach you where you like to read.  So everything is copied to the various outlets.
But wait!  There's more!  I love when I hear that.  But this time, there really is more.  BLOG!  There's a new blog!  A HIPAA blog  YES, that's right.  When you read the 'What is HIPAA' article, the link will take you right to it.  Read, click, subscribe.  Would that work?

        	| | Water Doesn't Boil Over
Why Does it When There's Something In It
Many have learned the hard way.  You start your prep, turn on the water and begin to do other things.  The water comes to a boil and you add your base.  Pasta, grits, oatmeal... you get the picture.  You turn the flame down to a simmer and continue to tend to other matters and... turn your head.  Just for a second.  Then you hear it.  Your eyes get big and you jump at the stove like a panther.  I mean it was just a second!

After all of the expletives, you ask yourself, "Wen will I learn?  Why does this keep happening?"  Oh, that's just me?  Sure, sure.   But why does this happen?

                | | What is HIPAA?
Why do we Need it?Whether you work in the medical profession or just visit your doctor or dentist, the medical information a patient shares with any healthcare provider should be private information. HIPAA is the formal way to assure patients a provider takes the commitment to protect their medical information seriously. Healthcare providers make three commitments to their patients to give that assurance.

Services That Work  We started to talk about it a year ago.  Something they wanted to consider, but weren't quite ready for.  After we made our end of the year visit to review the pros and cons of the previous year, we discussed planning the transition some time in 2013.  Yes, you heard right.  Kardon Technology reviews our level of service each year with our clients to address the best possible care.  But then...

Results from the 2012 Random Audit Protocol
In 2012, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Office of Civil Rights (HHS/OCR) initiated an Audit Pilot Program.  According to the HHS website , "OCR will use the audit program to assess HIPAA compliance efforts... identify best practices and discover risks and vulnerabilities".  It says a whole lot more, but in essence, there is gonna be'sum splaining to do.'   What were the results?  And better yet, why should the results interest you? |
