Technology at It's Best!

Kardon Tech

Greetings!

March madness!  Pollen.  Temperatures in the 80's.  Blossoms, joggers, and bikers.  Spring is back!

What does that mean for the technology world?  O.K., would you rather be looking out your office window working?  Or out at the park, lake, or under an umbrella on a patio?  Now you get it!  Take your laptop outside for an hour or two.  Answer your e-mails from your smart phone.  BUT...

Please be careful!  Dropped devices act a little differently.  It's hard to decide whether the weight of your laptop is slowing you down as you run from that bee.  And, if you use your device to swat anything, please have a tight grip.  There may not be a cloud in the sky when that flash shower passes over your keyboard.

And those are just the obvious problems.  Pollen and the fan in your computer don't always get along.  The same is true with the little itty bitty flying and crawling creatures that call the outdoors their home.

Hopefully, you read our Facebook posts, and have subscribed to our Blog.  We constantly encourage you to protect your devices.  Be sure you have a secure password in case of a theft.  Have a solid back-up option.  You never know what can affect your computer, or when.  But the elements certainly contribute.

Be mindful of your devices.  But, if something should happen, remember we do offer New Computer Consulting and Purchases.  In the meantime, go ahead.  Get out of the office and enjoy this weather.

Sincerely,

Brian G. Wilson

The Eyes and Ears at the Office...

Question:  So, I should be embarrassed to ask, but, this cloud thing.  What exactly is it?

Answer:  The tech people say it is "simply applications running on the Internet".  I just twisted my head to the side waiting for a word I understood and didn't hear any.  Eventually, I got a few words that meant something to me.

Clouds in the sky have different names and types but they are all basically puffy things where water gathers together and they float around holding the water and joining other clouds until they drop the water somewhere and start over.  Cloud computing has different types and names but they are basically gatherings of data and programs that float around on the Internet doing what we ask them to do even if we don't know we asked them to do it.  Whenever you upload something on the Internet like your pictures and videos or your access email in a web page you are using some form of cloud computing..

So, the next time you "download" your email to your computer think of it as Cloud Computing raining on you.  Stay out of the mud if you don't want a bath!.

Selecting the Right Service (Yes, I Mean Us)

What?!  So subtle doesn't always work.  We understand we represent a complex industry.  We also understand computer technicians are, well... uh, we'll just say a different breed.  I really understand it, because they are right there...  all the time.  I keep telling you guys I'm just like you.

I thought of this article when visiting prospects.  During one visit, the person across the desk said, "it's difficult because we don't understand what you are trying to tell us".  Another said, "I just nod yes and ask if it's working".  Sound familiar...

Services That Work

A client contacted us for help in setting up a router.  They wanted to add a guest network for their customers to use at their site but make sure the customers didn't get to the company servers.

They didn't contact us at first because they thought they could set it up properly on their own.  They had added their own wireless before and it worked.

The problem in that assumption happened when they connected things and...

New LinkedIn ApplicationsIntroducing Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office

Well, maybe not new.  I'm sure you all saw that LinkedIn acquired Rapportive last month.  Kardon Tech has been using Rapportive for nearly a year already.  We can help you with this application and many other contact management suggestions.

The great thing Rapportive does is capture the data out there on the web that is connected to your e-mail address.  What's wrong?  You put it out there...  You can then connect to them, add them as friends, or follow them through all of your social media sites.
And it shows you...

Need More Time?  We Can Help...

So, every month, we write about a new aspect of the Social Media environment.  This is in no way expert testimony (but we did qualify to be a Constant Contact All-Star last month).  I am simply sharing things I learn.  If you are anything like me, I'm sure you are saying, "great tips, but I really don't have time to put it to practice", or "after all of the time I spend, who really reads my posts".

Well, I say this somewhere in nearly every newsletter, but you know I do a lot of networking.  That's most likely how you joined the newsletter list.  In my circles, I meet related merchants.  We (Kardon Tech) like to offer our clients and contacts options to improve performance, even if we don't 'specialize' in certain areas.  Social Media is its own animal.  And although we have our beast trained, we (Yup, right in the middle of a sentence...)

Automobile Technology...

A group of us attended the Auto Show this past month.  It's amazing what's available in cars today, even the inexpensive ones.  So the question to the staff for this month is:

Reading about or seeing tech gadgets in cars today, what would you like most in your next car?:

Donna:  High MPG.  Oh, and lots of USB and power ports to charge and run all my gear.  And Bluetooth technology, without a doubt.

Karla:  Built in GPS for all the driving that I do.  I'd also add park assist (comes w/ most NAV systems today) and blind side indicators.

Jason:  I'd like to see some drive-by-wire technology. Give me the technology that was in KITT from Knightrider; that way I can take a nap or something instead of being bored by traffic.

Christa:  I think my "wants" for my next car are pretty simple - a hybrid car with a built in navigation system and Pandora radio access... I mean unless it could chauffeur me around by me simply putting in my destination, of course.

Brian:  I worked with GM for a couple of years, and so I'm partial to their OnStar service(s).  I think they had a huge jump on much of the communication technology, and they just keep getting better.  OnStar includes much of the items mentioned above.
