Bay Area Economic Club

The Bay Area Economic Club welcomes Brian Sarvello, Career and Technical Education Director for the Marquette- Alger RESA. The event will take place at Bay College Joseph Heirman Center beginning at 12pm ET.

Our nation is experiencing high unemployment, a growing skills gap and facing the impending retirement of millions of Baby Boomers whose expertise is critical to our nation's economy.   Career and Technical Education (CTE) and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) initiatives hold the best hope for filling the void and helping our economy to rebound.  New partnerships between secondary schools, postsecondary institutions and business & industry are changing the way we educate our young people and assuring they are prepared to meet the challenges of their future.  Brian Sarvello, will demonstrate how CTE works for our students and economy.

Brian Sarvello is the Career and Technical Education Director for the Marquette- Alger RESA, supervising all high school vocational programs in the two-county region.  He began his career as a teacher and coach at Baraga HS, where he revived the high school's football program, which hadn't won a single game in the previous six years and led them to the state finals in his fourth year there.  As a teacher he was named Teacher of the Year, Outstanding Educator of the Year, and received the W.K. Kellogg Foundation's Excellence in Education Award.  As Principal of Ishpeming HS, he received a Safe and Drug Free Schools Award for efforts to reduce substance abuse in his school and community. He also led the school to impressive ACT & Michigan Merit Exam scores, consistent 'A' grades on their state report card, and the selection of the school as one of America's Top High Schools by U.S. News and World Report magazine.  He's passionate about providing more vocational and STEM opportunities for students and providing our region with the skilled labor needed to sustain and grow our economy.

The public is welcome to attend. Fees are as follows; Individual Membership $80, Corporate Membership (3 attendees to each) $240, Guest fee is $25 per event which includes lunch and speaker. For reservations or for more information, call Sheila Krueger at 906-786-2192 or email shughes@deltami.org

May meeting to focus on issues related to the future of affordable energy in the Upper Peninsula

Valerie Brader - Key Note Speaker

Governor Snyder has laid out his vision for a "no regrets" energy future by 2025, calling for an emphasis on eliminating energy waste, and replacing coal with newer, cleaner technologies - natural gas and renewables.

"Michigan needs an energy policy that ensures we can be adaptable, have energy that is reliable and affordable, and protect our environment," Snyder said.  "We should set a reasonable, achievable, and efficient range of goals for 2025."

There are several key goals for the state's energy policy:

  • Adaptability. As part of the foundation of adaptability, eliminate energy waste and reduce coal and replace it with newer, cleaner technologies - natural gas and renewables.
  • Reliability. Michigan should become a leader in reliability in both reducing the average number of outages and their length. Additionally, ensure that our state never experiences massive outages due to lack of supply.
  • Affordability. In the area of affordability, Michigan residential customers should spend less on their combined energy bills (electric and natural gas) than the national average. In addition, Michigan needs to ensure that energy-intensive industries can choose Michigan for job and investment decisions to better compete.
  • Protection of the Environment. Michigan's energy generation needs to be part of a healthier future, reducing mercury emissions, pollution that creates acid rain, and particles in the air for the health of Michigan. Finally, Snyder called for an increase in the renewable portfolio based on relative cost, reliability and environmental benefits.

Save the date to hear more about the execution of this vision in Michigan and hear from key players in the future of energy for the Upper Peninsula.
