Please take a moment to view our weekly update to keep current on the exciting happenings around the Upper Peninsula.

For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology

The inaugural Upper Peninsula FIRST Robotics competition will be held at the Escanaba High School on March 14th and 15th of this year.

FIRST Robotics inspires young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.

Dubbed a varsity Sport for the Mind,™ First Robotics competitions combine the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of 25 students or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program a robot to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It's as close to "real world" engineering as a student can get. Professional mentors volunteer their time and talents to guide each team.

Students have the opportunity to:

  • Work alongside professional engineers.
  • Build and compete with a robot of their own design.
  • Learn and use sophisticated hardware and software.
  • Develop design, project management, programming, teamwork, and strategic thinking skills.
  • Earn a place in the Championship.
  • Qualify for over $16 million in college scholarships.

Volunteers for the event are needed.  If you are interested in getting involved contact Holly Peoples at 906.280.2441 or email hpeoples@jobforce.org.
