Expanded trailhead planned for city land

By KYLE WHITNEY - Journal Staff Writer, The Mining Journal

The Marquette City Commission voiced approval for a Noquemanon Trail Network project that would allow the construction of trailhead facilities on city property adjacent to M-553.  That land is a part of the Heartwood Forestland, originally 2,400 acres of property purchased by the city in 2005.

Under the plan presented to the commission by Lyle VanderSchaaf, who sits on the NTN board and is president of the group's single-track committee, the NTN would expand on its existing trailhead, which is located along the east side of M-553 between Division Street and Mount Marquette Road.

The Noquemanon Trail Network is planning a $70,000 project to expand its trailhead facilities along M-553. That trailhead provides access to the NTN'S South Trails, seen here.  Plans include the construction of a 24-foot by 32-foot open-air structure, as well as the creation of a gravel parking lot to fit 100 cars, picnic facilities and signage consistent with other city signs.  "In all, the NTN would be looking at committing close to $70,000 in value to the city with this project," said VanderSchaaf. more->

Natural Resources

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources announced that 19 communities across the state will share $735,100 in Recreation Passport grants. Money for this fund is derived from the sale of the Recreation Passport, which replaced the resident motor vehicle permit (MVP) - or window sticker - for state park entrance in 2010.

Grants have been awarded to Rollin Township (Lenawee County), Bay de Noc Township (Delta County), city of Cadillac (Wexford County), Maple Ridge Township (Delta County), Charlevoix Township (Charlevoix County), city of Munising (Alger County), city of Portage (Kalamazoo County), Garden Township (Delta County), Marquette County, Tilden Township (Marquette County), Wheatland Township (Hillsdale County), Jackson County, Oakland County, Sherman Township (Iosco County), village of Lake Linden (Houghton County), city of Westland (Wayne County), Genesee County, city of Rochester Hills (Oakland County) and Emmet County.

The full list of award recipients, grant amounts and description of their projects are available at www.michigan.gov/dnr-grants by clicking on Recreation Passport Grants.

The cities, counties and townships selected to receive a Recreation Passport grant clearly demonstrated projects that are designed to provide better public outdoor recreation opportunities or facilities, infrastructure and economic development plans that support public outdoor recreation activity. The successful entries were chosen from a field of 82 grant applications seeking some $2.9 million in funding. more->

State trail envisioned

Gov. Rick Snyder has directed state agencies to work toward developing a roughly 900-mile signature hiking and biking trail running from downstate Belle Isle to Ironwood.  In his message on "Ensuring Our Future: Energy and the Environment" delivered this week, Snyder said Michigan has more total trail miles than just about any other state.  FULL ARTICLE AT THE MINING JOURNAL->

ROTC LEADERSHIP TRAINING!

JAG ROTC 2013

JAG Members from North Star Academy visited NMU's ROTC where students learned about The Reserved Officer's Training Corp.   Major Holman led a discussion on the many aspects of leadership. Students then broke into two groups and participated in team-building and leadership activities.

Following each activity, the group debriefed what went well and how to improve. They then completed the activity a second time, but a new twist was added to make the activity newly challenging. The students learned communication is a key in any team-building activity. You have to know how to communicate with your peers in more ways than just speaking.

Thank you to Major Holman, Cadet Roberts, Cadet Carlson, and Anthem, Major Holman's service dog!

We had an amazing experience!
