About OC Math Circle
The Orange County Math Circle was founded in 2007 by math enthusiast Johnny Li (Harvard University, Class of 2015) to bring his experience from San Diego Math Circle to share with more students in his hometown. Please read Orange County Math Circle, A Service Learning Project by Dr. Michelle Muratori of Johns Hopkins University to learn more about its history.

Dear friends,
With the onset of the holiday season and the end of 2012, I would like to thank everyone who has participated in OCMC events. Most of all, I would like to thank everyone who made a contribution for our cause at the Thanksgiving Tournament-all of your help is much appreciated. As a new year approaches (or maybe the end of the world, according to the Mayans), OCMC is bouncing around new ideas and suggestions. As always, I would be happy to hear your opinions on anything that we could improve on or any events that you would like to see take place.
I hope everyone has a joyous and stress-free holiday as well as a great start to the New Year. Good luck to all the seniors applying for colleges!
Thanks again,
Holly Zhou

OC Register Golden Envelopes
As many of you know, it takes a lot of support from volunteers, parents, and the community to keep OCMC going. Daily subscribers of the OC Register are being sent "golden envelopes," with a $100 cheque enclosed that can be written out to any nonprofit organization of their choice. After filling the check in, all subscribers have to do is to mail it back to OC Register (an enveloped is enclosed), and the organization you pick will receive $100 towards advertising and promoting! So, if you and your family happen to be daily subscribers of OC Register, please be on the lookout for this envelope. If you receive it, please write Orange County Math Circle on the check, sign it, and send it back to OC Register! Thank you so much for your support!

2012 AMC 8 Results
The Orange County Math Circle hosted the 2012 AMC 8 with 178 participants. We want to send out a special thank you to Professor Alessandra Pantano from UC Irvine Math Department for supervising the event and our parent volunteers who proctored the exam. Providing a gap in the community, the OCMC stepped in to provide the AMC competitions this year. We had received the results and notified all students of their scores. Overall, 18 students were awarded Distinction (top 1% nationwide, score >=22), 41 students received Honor Roll (top 5% nationwide, score >= 18), and 30 students made Achievement Roll (6th grade or below and score >= 15). One student, Edward Xu, received a perfect score. Congratulations to all participants! For more information, please visit OCMC Website. |

OC Math Circle hosts a successful Thanksgiving Math Tournament
The Orange County Math Circle held its 4th annual Thanksgiving Tournament November 24th. A hefty attendance of at least 142 elementary school students from across Orange County gathered at this big event to celebrate Thanksgiving in their own way. In a rigorous math competition, students passionate about math engaged in a friendly but fast-paced contest of mathematical skill. Like the previous tournaments, this year's consisted of an individual round and a team round - a refreshing opportunity for students to exercise their creativity, tackle challenging problems with friends, and go beyond what they are taught in school.
Caltech Harvey Mudd Math Competition
On Saturday, November 17, 2012, 45 teams of approximately 6 students per team gathered in the small square of the Harvey Mudd College, milling into the Galileo building for a fun-filled day of math. These students came from all over Southern California, including a few teams from Northern California, who have traveled to participate in the competition held by the Caltech and Harvey Mudd Math Clubs. Afterward came a welcoming lecture on the magic of 3 by 3 magic squares, and an introduction of the Harvey Mudd Math Club members and the competition's organizers.
Interested students in joining this extremely fun and mathematical event should participate next year's Caltech Harvey Mudd Math Competition, held at Caltech.
TEDxYouth
Sunday, December 9 was a sunny winter day, full of possibilities, and none were better than the possibilities at TEDxYouthBommerCanyon, an independently organized TED event held at the Yost Theater in Santa Ana, California to a sold-out audience. Three members of the OC Scholar staff were there and enjoyed an afternoon filled with ideas, activities, and speeches from twelve speakers who discussed topics ranging from skateboarding to hip hop dance to musical therapy.

Santa Ana Math Club
After having a month of no lessons, the Santa Ana Math Club students were itching to resume, and instructors kicked right into algebra and functions, the main focus of the day. As the last session of the year, Christmas spirit filled the air, and we mixed games and treats with lessons.
The next SAMC meeting will be held on January 19th at Lathrop Intermediate (1111 South Broadway, Santa Ana). If you would like to volunteer as an instructor, please email Anne Chen.
