About OC Math Circle

The Orange County Math Circle was founded in 2007 by math enthusiast Johnny Li (Harvard University, Class of 2015) to bring his experience from San Diego Math Circle to share with more students in his hometown.  Please read Orange County Math Circle, A Service Learning Project by Dr. Michelle Muratori of Johns Hopkins University to learn more about its history.

Johnny also published an article titled "Orange County Math Circle: Where Math and Service Meet" in Imagine Magazine, May 2011.

Dear friends,

As I enter my senior year, I am amazed at how much the Orange County Math Circle has grown since I first joined as a freshman. We volunteers have been hard at work all summer to ensure that next year we continue to improve our services and expand on our programs. We have assembled a talented team of student leaders to help carry out our goals and our message to the region at large. Thank you for your continued support and participation.

A Message from the Editor

Dear Readers,

Orange County Math Circle is kicking off the school year with a great start and many activities to get involved in. Our goal this year is to keep everyone updated on all aspects of OCMC monthly. This includes any current events hosted by OCMC as well as new articles from OC Scholar and math tutoring with the Santa Ana Math Club. I encourage you to submit any feedback about the newsletter, whether it be things to improve on, new activity ideas, or general comments. Thank you for subscribing, and keep reading!

Please submit all answers to: hollyz@outlook.com. The participant who submits the correct answer first will receive a prize.

Have any ideas for the next problem of the month? Please submit your problem ideas to hollyz@outlook.com.

OCMC Calendar Updated

A tentative OCMC calendar has been posted online. Please check the website for any changes, but the general calendar for 2012-2013 events is online now at here.

Free AMC 8 Preparation Classes
September 22, 4:30 - 6:30 PM, Concirdia University, Irvine

The school year is beginning, and it's time to start practicing for the upcoming AMC 8 competition on November 13, 2012. The Orange County Math Circle is hosting free AMC 8 classes for students in grades 6 to 8. Former AMC 8 competitors will teach key concepts and problem solving techniques.

The next class will be on Saturday, September 22 from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM at Concordia University in room LA-123. To participate in the event, please sign up here. If you are a high school student and would like to volunteer with OCMC, sign up here.

To find out more, read this article on the AMC 8 class.

High School Math Classes
October 7, 3:00 - 6:00 PM, University of California, Irvine

High School Math Club has a class in preparation for HMMT this Sunday from 3:00-6:00 in UCI Natural Sciences II room 1201. See http://www.uci.edu/campusmap/ for a map of the campus. The October meeting of the High School Math Club is on Sunday, October 7th at UCI Natural Sciences II, with a lesson on symmetry. Also, UCI math circle has a mathematical exploration class at UCI on September 22. We encourage all high schoolers with an interest in math to attend these meetings. If you are interested, please contact Yelena Mendelshtam and Eric Xu.

For those who would like an extra mathematical challenge, USAMTS 2010-13 started recently, and is a very interesting free mathematics competition open to all United States high school students. Students who score well are invited to take AIME, so it is an alternative to AMC (although a much harder!) path to AIME. Most importantly, it is great practice on deeper problem solving. For more information, see USAMTS.

Interested in Starting a Mu Alpha Theta Club?

All students should consider starting a chapter of Mu Alpha Theta, the National Mathematics Honor Society, at their high school if a chapter does not exist already. Membership in Mu Alpha Theta brings numerous benefits and opportunities for service, competition, and community service. Furthermore, the annual Mu Alpha Theta National Convention is in San Diego this year, so it is a fantastic year to become a part of Mu Alpha Theta to take advantage of this rare opportunity. More information about Mu Alpha Theta can be found here. If you are interested in starting a chapter or have any questions, email me at iamkevin96@gmail.com. I can provide materials to aid in streamlining the registration process for a chapter as well as general advice.

OCMC Volunteer Opportunities

Please look at this informational flyer to see 2012-2013 volunteer opportunities available through OCMC. All of our branches could use help from local middle school or high school students.

OCMC Teacher Trainng

On Saturday, August 25th, volunteers throughout Orange County came to the first Orange County Math Circle Student Teacher Training at Concordia University. In this 4-hour session, Dr. James Li of Avid Academy for Gifted Youth helped refine the teaching techniques of OCMC volunteers through various lectures and critiques of students' lesson plans. Click here to read more.

Summer Experiences

Over the summer, students across Orange County engaged in meaningful educational and volunteering activities. As a part of its summer accomplishments, the OC Scholar has compiled a series of articles featuring eight students, who have expanded their breadth of knowledge and experiences in the classrooms of the San Joaquin Marsh, the laboratories of UC Irvine, and the lecture halls of Columbia University. Articles will be updated in groups over the next week. Of these eight students, three students, Anne Chen, Dennis Shim and Alex Zivkovic, are members of the OC Math Circle leadership board.

This article, titled "Summer Memories," can be viewed here.
