Trade the Malls for Walls!
Trade the Malls for Walls is WRC's holiday assistance program for families using our services. Rather than asking donors for toys that are quickly broken or outgrown, WRC encourages groups to purchase gifts that help a family's new house feel more like a home. Donor groups receive wish lists of items families need including bedding, dishes and cookware, shower curtains, cleaning supplies and more. Donors also help with winter clothing as needed and, of course, a few gifts for each family member.
For 2015, WRCDV is assisting a record 35 families outside our safe house and 14 families staying at our safe house with holiday gifts and household items. If you would still like to help a family for the holidays, please contact Amber at 404-370-7670 or amber@wrcdv.org. If you cannot adopt a family but would still like to purchase one or more gifts, please visit our Amazon.com wish list. All donations are tax deductible as allowed by law.

Karen's Story
This month, we are featuring Karen's story on our website. Karen says, " When my boyfriend assaulted me I called the police, but they said they couldn't help because I didn't have visible injuries. The next day, things got so bad I had to go to the emergency room. The WRC legal advocate was able to get a detective from the DV unit to come to my house to meet with me. The detective was able to get warrants issued for my boyfriend's arrest and track down my car." Visit our website to read more from Karen about her work with our legal advocacy program.

Updates
This month, we also have several exciting updates to share. Please join us in wishing congratulations to our director of legal services Ayonna Johnson for being honored by the National Coalition of 100 Black Women for her domestic violence advocacy work. Additionally, congratulations to our legal advocate Asher Burk for being elected to serve as co-chair of the DeKalb County Domestic Violence Task Force for the next two years. And speaking of our legal advocates, we were proud to join our partners across the county last month for the kick-off event for DeKalb's Ending Abuse in Later Life project. Our legal advocates are helping conduct monthly specialized training sessions for 850 law enforcement officers, judges, prosecutors and victim service providers who come into contact with older adults experiencing abuse.
