Work party for Community Garden in Sumner

Sumner is a geographically small area (less than 0.4 square miles) at the North Eastern tip of Portland bound by I-205, Sandy Blvd. and 82nd Ave. The neighborhood size and location as a perceived drive-through community does not in any sense define the character of the community. With fewer households than any neighborhood you will find neighbors advocating for needed pedestrian safety improvements, natural areas, and a quality of life that other more established neighborhoods have better access to. Read More.

Learn more about Mixed Use Zones in your Neighborhood
The Mixed Use Zones Project will revise Portland's Commercial zoning codes applied in Centers and Corridors in your neighborhood. Join us at the CNN land use meeting on 3/18 to find out more about concepts such as: Improve height transitions to lower density in residential areas; Address building scale of larger buildings; Encourage ground-floor and commercial activity in key areas; Foster affordable housing, historic preservation, plazas, and other features. Sandy Blvd. and 82nd Ave. are Civic Corridors; Cully Blvd. NE 42nd, and Fremont St. are Neighborhood Centers; and Hollywood is an Urban Center as designated in the Comprehensive Plan Update. Learn more about how your neighborhood will grow in Mixed Use Zones. Read More.

Lee Más: Central NE Childhood Literacy Grant Project Kicks Off

The Lee Más project was awarded a CNN grant in January and has already made great progress. To the left, Rigler Literacy Coach, Becky Bourassa presents tutor strategies at the February 21 training. About 50 volunteers, partners and businesses stepped up to be trained as tutors. Over the next month, Our 42nd Ave. partners will connect each volunteer with two students and they will read together 1:1 for 20 minutes, one-three times per week through early June. What a meaningful beginning to new community building initiatives in 2015!

2015 Portland Sunday Parkways
Sunday Parkways is a series of free community events opening the city's largest public space - its streets - for people to walk, bike, roll and discover active transportation. The events are hugely popular; total attendance topped 100,000 last year. Mark your calendars for the NE event on July 26th!
