Penland School of Crafts 28th Annual Benefit Auction
August 9 - 10, 2013
Here's the next in our ongoing series of Penland Benefit Auction newsletters, featuring artists whose work will be a part of this year's auction. We have invited trustees, staff members, collectors, and friends to write about pieces that will be included in the summer 2013 benefit event, the artists who created them, and the experience of living with the work they have purchased in past auctions.
A few words from curator of contemporary craft Gail M. Brown about auction artist Daniel DiCaprio...

What attracts each of us visually? The question invites a layered richness of possibilities. Subtle, refined, nuanced. Bold, blatant, raucous. The familiar or the new. Mastery or experimentation. The polite or the provocative. Personal definitions of those characteristics. And enticing complexities when contrasting extremes are present which then 'toy' with our assumptions. What holds our attention? And what is personally memorable and causes a craving for a second look?

Daniel DiCaprio's auction piece: Mutation 8, maple, paint, and silver, 16 x 3 x 4 inches

"Daniel DiCaprio's exquisite, masterfully sculpted "organisms," vessel-like forms of wood and paint with delicate silver additions, seduce the eyes and invite the hand of the viewer. They attract questions as well as tactile experience. They propose seemingly contrasting observations: wood, a hard, resistant material becomes fluid and graceful; the sleek, black, glossy painted surfaces offer a constant polished skin; the plethora of hair-like metal prickles entice and simultaneously somewhat threaten; the presence of subtle, recurring references to both flora and fauna propose a vocabulary of organic forms, with concurrent reminiscence of manufactured parts and, the intimate familiarity of the work is also imbued with a disquieting, enigmatic newness.
"In both jewelry and sculptural scale, these rich, elegant yet quirky specimens present meaningful dichotomies- a discomforting beauty, an understated sensuality, constant provocation and insinuating mystery, all of which insure their memorableness. Mutation 8, a new wall sculpture in the series, is recognizably inspired by the pitcher plant, an alluring, exotic, yet often unsettling natural species made the more so in his adaptive vocabulary, palette, scale and significant come-hither attitude. True seduction means returning to the idea and the experience, being drawn in by recurring, insistent memories. DiCaprio accomplishes this for himself and then others, in a seemingly intuitive process."
