Penland School of Crafts 28th Annual Benefit Auction
August 9 - 10, 2013
Welcome to a new series of Penland Benefit Auction newsletters, featuring artists whose work will be a part of this year's auction. We have invited trustees, staff members, collectors, and friends to write about pieces that will be included in the summer 2013 benefit event, the artists who created and gave them, and the experience of living with the work they have purchased in past auctions.

Tim Tate is a nationally acclaimed contemporary glass artist best known for his amazing reliquaries that combine blown and cast glass, found objects and video and audio components to tell stories that are sometimes political, dealing with social cultural issues, sometimes humorous, simply making you smile. When viewed, these unique and often haunting pieces evoke a wide range of emotions and call to mind personal experiences of the viewer. Tim's award-winning work is in the permanent collections of numerous museums including the Mint, The Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution, the Katzen Art Center, the University of Richmond Art Museum, the University of Virginia Art Museum, and Vanderbilt University. He is a founder and co-director of the Washington Glass School and Studio, a unique educational facility in the Washington DC area offering hands-on instruction and workshops in a variety of glass techniques. It encourages research and exploration of new techniques in all aspects of glass and media, and it offers an opportunity for artists in other media to experience the unique character of glass.
Tim Tate has a long and passionate history with Penland. He discovered the school many years ago and has since visited the school over 26 times, most recently this past October as an instructor. Speaking to the patrons at last year's benefit auction, he emphasized the importance of Penland in his life, boldly declaring that all he is as an artist has stemmed from his Penland experiences.

Tim Tate, Dreaming Of Heaven, blown and cast glass, electronics, found objects, video, 18 x 10 x 19 inches
|
Dreaming of Heaven, Tim's generous donation to the 2013 auction, is both inspirational and thought-provoking and is truly representative of Tim's finest work in the mixed media of glass and video. One of Tim's intriguing reliquaries, the piece combines sculptural and functional glass elements with moving images and electronics. Inside the blown glass dome is a small ladder for climbing to heaven, and the finial on top is a cast glass napping figure with a dream coming out of his head--a dream of what heaven is like, perhaps? At the center of the composition is a dream figure holding a lens in front of a a small video screen to magnify a loop of the final scene of Jean Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast, where the beast and the beauty fly off into a cloud-filled heaven. Dreaming of Heaven is a truly magnificent piece, with an engaging story, that will be an outstanding addition to anyone's collection--a piece that you can admire for its beauty, the skill of the artist and its thoughtful and thought-provoking narrative.
