Alumni Newsletter | November 2014

It is that time of year again. It is time to slow down and reflect on all the blessings we have as Americans and give thanks to the Lord. Yes, we have ups and downs, but when we consider all things, most of us are truly blessed. Take a moment to think about all your blessings. Do you have food to fuel your body? Do you have clothing to keep you warm? Do you have a bed to sleep in? Did you receive a good report from your doctor? Do you have a means of transportation? Do you have a family? Do you have friends you can count on when you need help? The list can go on and on.

This year, however, let's be conscious that there may be those around us who are struggling. I encourage each of us to share our blessings during this Thanksgiving and Christmas season. There are many opportunities for us to reach out. Donating to a local food pantry, buying presents for a family in need, shoveling your neighbor's sidewalk and driveway, inviting someone to church or to your Thanksgiving or Christmas family meal, are all beneficial just to name a few. If you are not sure how to help, check with your local church or Salvation Army. Tuesday, December 2nd, 2014 is "#GivingTuesday", a global day dedicated to generosity.  (See below for more information about "#Giving Tuesday.")  I am sure as we reach out, we will experience the blessing as much as those we've helped!

We would love to hear how you shared your blessings. Let us know how you reached out in a few words on the CUW Alumni Facebook page.  Together, our CUW alumni family can continue to impact the communities we live in.

Wishing you a very blessed Thanksgiving,

Michelle "Mickie" Wagner

2016 Reformation Trip

Here is your chance to travel with a Luther scholar, Rev. Dr. Timothy Maschke, and follow the steps of Martin Luther. Concordia University Wisconsin is considering a trip to Germany in May 2016.  The estimated cost would be around $3,500 per person for a ten-day trip out of Chicago. We are surveying our alumni to see the level of interest for planning purposes.  Please complete the short survey below. More information will be sent out at a later date.

Monthly Servant Leader Roundtable

Servant leadership - a philosophy and set of practices that enriches the lives of individuals, builds better organizations and ultimately creates a more just and caring world.

Starting February 2015, we will be hosting a monthly Servant Leader Roundtable at Concordia.  Discussion will be based on the book The Case for ServantLeadership  by Dr. Kent M. Keith.  Currently there is a Servant Leader Milwaukee roundtable that meets on a monthly basis at the Mad Rooster and the CUW roundtable will be a branch of this group. Each month a leadership topic is explored from the perspective of the participants. While the topic will change each month, the enduring theme of the roundtable is "The wisdom is in the room." For more information and notes from their previous roundtables, go to their website.

Twice a year a regional servant leader event is held at Milwaukee School of Engineering.  Panels of business leaders discuss how they incorporate Servant Leadership into their organization. If you would like to attend the regional session on December 15 and learn more about Servant Leadership and this group, CLICK HERE.

More information on the February CUW Servant Leaders Roundtable will be on the Alumni events page and in future alumni newsletters. Participation in the roundtable is free.  Breakfast will be available for purchase. For more information about Servant Leadership, go to their website or check out Milwaukee Servant Leadership on YouTube.

#GivingTuesday - December 2nd

In 2012, a new holiday tradition began after "Black Friday" and "Cyber Monday" to give individuals an opportunity to give back to others and bring awareness of generosity.  "Giving Tuesday" launches the charitable giving season between Thanksgiving and Christmas for individuals to consider giving, volunteerism and how they could really make a difference in the lives of others during the holiday season. To see more ides to impact your community, visit the #GivingTuesday website.

Concordia's theme for the 2014/15 academic school year is "Hope in His Faithfulness" based on Lamentations 3:21-23.  As you reflect on your blessings this season, consider a gift of hope and education for our current and future students. You will help make a difference in the lives of young men and women who are being

developed in mind, body, and spirit for service to Christ in the Church and the world.
