Tenute Silvio Nardi
Brunello di Montalcino
Tuscany
"The 2008 Brunello di Montalcino is lovely. Tobacco, dried herbs, cedar, plums and cloves are nicely layered in the glass. Firm yet well-integrated tannins support a mid-weight finish laced with expressive floral notes. In 2008 Nardi didn't feel conditions were ideal to bottle their top two selections, so the Brunello includes juice that would otherwise have gone into the Manachiara and Poggio Doria. Nardi's 2008 should drink well upon release and for another decade beyond that. Vinifications lasted around 22-23 days. Nardi preferred not to go too long in 2008, fearing over-extraction given that the maturation of skins and seeds wasn't perfect. The 2008 spent one year in French oak barrels, 25% new, followed by one year in cask. All of the parcels were vinified separately but ultimately were blended into the straight Brunello. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020." (WA)

"(14.5% alcohol): Bright red. Complex and inviting aromas of red cherry, violet, brown spices, mocha and licorice; I couldn't keep my nose out of the glass. Sweet and subtle on the palate, with very good inner-mouth perfume and energy to the flavors of red fruits, marzipan and mocha. Finishes long, smooth and clean, with a firm tannic spine. This is a standout entry-level Brunello--no mean trick when production is in the range of 100,000 bottles." (IWC)
International Wine Cellar: 90 pts.
"Bright cherry cola and black currant gives this Brunello a plump and fruity personality that is difficult to find in the wines of 2008. Those fruit notes are raw, bold and are followed by a soft touch of milk chocolate or vanilla. The wine shows a creamy, velvety texture with a point of acidity and alcoholic heat. -M.L. (5/1/2013)" (WE)
Wine Enthusiast: 90 pts.
"I like the aromas of ripe fruit, smoked meat and orange peel. The wine is full-bodied, with chewy tannins that are dusty and ripe. Dense texture at the end. Needs a little more bottle age. Try in 2014." (JS)
James Suckling: 92 pts.
GRAPES:
100% Sangiovese Grosso.
Tenute Silvio Nardi's classic Brunello is a blend of the finest grapes from the Manachiara and Casale del Bosco estates. Silvio Nardi follows the strict DOCG laws required of a classified Brunello di Montalcino. Yield is limited; only the top 70% of the grapes is used to make the wine. The fruit is carefully handpicked and sorted. Fermentation and maceration takes at least 24 days (varies with parcel) at controlled temperature of less than 30°C. Aged for 12 months in new and used French oak barriques (Allier) before 18 months in large Slavonian oak barrels. Bottle aged at least 12 months before release.
HARVEST NOTE:
The 2008 harvest was "a double-sided coin." Early in the season (from blooming to flowering, or April-June) there was a rainy, cold climate, which caused some problems for fruit set. Thinned-out clusters had resistance to maladies, but also had lower production per vine. Intense spring rain was followed by 3 months of drought. Temperatures were never hot but exceeded the average. Water reserves rapidly ran out and vines showed some stress. Ripening was slow and difficult, particularly with polyphenol levels, and per-vine yields were lower. The harvest was interrupted a few days by rain, which helped ripening of the grapes. With greater complexity, color and acidity, the grapes gave the wines freshness. Yields were 20% lower than the year before. In general, 2008 is a good vintage. The wines have intense color, well-developed tannins and exceptional acidity.
TASTING NOTE:
This deep, ruby-red wine has intense, complex aromas of red fruits and spices, with toasty oak notes. The wine shows a silky texture, great finesse and profound flavors, framed by noble, velvety tannins. Though impressive now, this wine will benefit from aging.
FOOD PAIRING:
Pair with thick porterhouse steak or rich fish such as sturgeon or grouper.
