"QUITE IMPRESSIVE $24.95 SPANISH GRENACHE 2010 ALTO MONCAYO-VERATON GRANACHA (GRENACHE)
Year after year the Alto Moncayo winery of Spain produces remarkable wines that are almost always superb values in their mid-$20 range. In 2010 again they produced such a winner. There vineyard and winery are located in the (roughly) north-east part of Spain in the Campo de Borja area which nearly adjoins the very southern area of the Rioja. But where as the Rioja is most famous for its Tempranillo grapes the Campo do Borga dominate variety is our old friend the Granacha (Grenache in French). I found in the 2010 Veraton a rich, mouth-filling wine but with a surprisingly velvety structure. A wine with that appealing "roasted berry" Grenache quality along with ripe dark berries, currants and chocolate. I find myself in close agreement to Robert Parker when he, himself (and not one of his competent "hired guns" reviewers), writes, that; "This outstanding winery, whose top end wines are made under the auspices of the well-known Australian winemaker, Chris Ringland, also produces this reasonably priced Veraton from 100% Grenache. Aged 17 months in a combination of French and American oak, and bottled unfiltered, it reveals good minerality from the vineyard's slate and clay soils. Soft, round and full-bodied with an expansive, fleshy mouth feel as well as plenty of red and black fruits, this terroir-driven red exhibits some oak, but it is well-integrated and reasonably subtle. Drink this full-bodied, dense 2009 over the next 5-7 years."

(Martins Guide to Wine Bargains)
Joint venture of Jose Miguel San Martin, Jorge Ordonez, Bodegas Borsao and Dan Phillips in conjunction with Chris Ringland. Winery is located in the town of Bulbuente. Grapes are sourced from 62 hectares (153.2 acres) of old clone Garnacha vines planted on hillside vineyards oriented to the southwest. A few of the vineyards are terraced. All the vines are vaso trained. The vineyards are located in 3 villages. Very unique soils of red clay (indicative of being rich in iron) mixed with red slate. Because of its hillside location the soils are very poor in organic matter and shallow. A few sites have calcareous soils. Continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. Nighttime during the summer brings cool temperatures to moderate the growing season. There is scant rainfall. Inky purple. A heady bouquet evokes ripe red berries, anise, mocha and pungent fresh flowers. Supple and sweet on entry, then more structured in the middle, offering deep, mineral-accented dried strawberry and cherry liqueur flavors. Takes a spicy turn on the long, sappy finish, which echoes the pure red berry qualities.

This wine is spectacular, and represents the perfect foil for grilled steak. Rich, full bodied and muscular, Alto Moncayo has riveting intensity and palate staining extract; this Spanish red is inky/purple, full-bodied, and rich. This pedal-to-the-metal offering should age handsomely for a decade. Joint venture of Jose Miguel San Martin, Jorge Ordonez, Bodegas Borsao and Dan Phillips in conjunction with Chris Ringland.
