Pinot Noir
Stanley Ranch
Carneros

Originally planted in the 1870's, Stanly Ranch is the eastern most vineyard on the Napa side of the Las Carneros appellation. The original vineyard of 300 acres was the first to achieve critical acclaim for Carneros wines when it garnered medals from viticultural fairs sponsored in 1888. Louis M. Martini first purchased Carneros grapes in the 1930s from the Stanly Ranch, a part of which had miraculously survived the phylloxera infestation of the 1880s. In 1942, Martini purchased 200 acres of the Stanly Ranch and six years later he began Pinot Noir & Chardonnay clonal experimentation. COHO has been making a Stanly Ranch Pinot Noir since our first vintage in 2002. We have been fortunate to purchase the oldest existing section of the vineyard that was planted around 1970. The Pinot Noir clone of this section, originally from Pommard in Burgundy, is named for Louis Martini who identified it during his years of field work as most suitable for the Carneros soils. As this portion of vineyard is going into decline because of age, we began in 2008 incorporating other sections that are planted with Dijon clones. The vineyard sits just above the tidal marshes that flow into San Pablo Bay (which sits above the San Francisco Bay). Most afternoons during the growing season the warm to hot temperatures farther north in the Napa Valley act like a magnet drawing the cool breezes and fog from the bay. These cooling temperatures will began to bring relief to the vines in the afternoon and often not roll out until mid-morning the next day. This cooling blanket creates an ideal environment for the Stanly Ranch Pinot Noir to develop the spicy aromatics and complex black cherry.

Headwaters Proprietary Red Blend
Napa Valley

"The 2009 Headwaters is a gorgeous wine. Sweet red berries, flowers, licorice and mint are some of the notes that emerge from this silky, elegant blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017." (WA)

Coho Headwaters Napa Valley Red Wine is a "Bordeaux blend" of three varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon (66%); Merlot (32%); and 2% Petite Verdot. Most of the source vineyards for this wine are in the "Coombsville" area of the Napa Valley. This "terroir" provides deep and opaque red color, supple red cherry/wild berry and cassis fruit, and toasty oak on the nose, which then continues to deliver the same fruit tones and integrated oak nuances, with great complexity of flavors and power on the palate. The supple tannins offer a silky fine-grained texture to the wine and a lingering, fruit-forward finish.

Cabernet Sauvignon
Summitvine Vineyard
Diamond Mountain District, Napa Valley

"The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Summit Vine Ranch comes across as quite deep and powerful, with generous dark fruit that fills out its broad frame nicely. This could use another few years for the tannins to soften, but it is very nicely balanced. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019." (WA)
Wine Advocate: 92 pts.
"Bright, full red. Sexy, claret-like aromas of black cherry, fresh herbs, chocolate and leather. The palate shows good sweetness and depth to the mellow flavors of cherry, leather, game and underbrush. Finishes with a serious dusting of tannins and good aromatic persistence." (IWC)
International Wine Cellar: 90 pts.
In 2004 we met Michael and Susan Klopka who had lovingly planted a small Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard near the top of Diamond Mountain in the northern end of Napa Valley. One look at the porous, red volcanic soils, and the exposure to the cool afternoon breezes coming all the way from Lake Sonoma, we were convinced that this had the makings of an outstanding Cabernet vineyard. The northwest hillside exposure provides plenty of hang time, and the long, sunny days slowly ripen the grapes to perfection. The first year the vineyard produced wine was 2004 and each year we have seen very dark and rich wines, with intense black cherry and black olive aromas and layers of velvety currant, black cherry and blackberry fruit in the mouth. Stunning and remarkably elegant, they exhibit a dense core of fleshy, black fruit. These wines are immaculately balanced that finish long and complex with firm, integrated tannins. We have presented the 2007 and 2008 SummitVine Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon (barrel samples) at the last two Napa Valley Vintners "Premiere" Auctions. These trade only events held annually in February give the members of the wine trade from around the world a first look and the opportunity to bid on some of Napa's best wines. We have been very gratified by the extremely positive comments the wines have received as well as the high bids, surpassing many better known and higher priced wines.

Michael Black Vineyard
Napa Valley

"Firm and tightly wound, but shows good structure. Distinctive aromas of toasty currant and black olive lead to deep flavors of black cherry, charred oak and dill. Needs time. Best from 2015 through 2019. 339 cases made." (WS)

"The 2009 Merlot Michael Black Vineyard is a super-ripe, opulent wine bursting with dark fruit, blackberry jam, spices and licorice. Despite its over the top style, the wine shows lovely balance and tons of class. There is no shortage of personality here. The blend is 98% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019." (WA)
Wine Advocate: 91 pts.
Napa native Michael Black has been a respected viticultralist and vineyard engineer for over 40 years. His resume includes planting many high profile vineyards in both Napa Valley and Sonoma County. In 1987 Michael decided to plant a vineyard on the rocky hillside surrounding his house. Located in Coombsville, the vineyard benefits from the two defining characteristics of the region: cool, marine influenced air and volcanic, well-drained soils. To give the vineyard a personal touch, Michael propagated his own Merlot clone that he named the "Black" Clone. The desired characteristics were small berries set in small clusters, all the better to concentrate the structure and complexity of the fruit. In 2004 COHO was privileged to become associated with the Michael Black Vineyard and began to purchase the entire output. The wines reveal a richness and depth of flavor that is most often associated with the Merlot based wines from the Pommerol region of Bordeaux. Our fans often say "this is a Cabernet lovers Merlot".
