tarima hill ANOTHER LAWC WINE BARGAIN!
100% Monastrell

2010
Bodegas Volver
Tarima Hill
Alicante

"The opaque purple-colored 2010 Tarima Hill exhibits notes of chocolate fudge, pen ink, graphite, blueberries and blackberries. This full-bodied, 100% Monastrell should drink well for a decade or more. These amazing efforts taste more like they should cost $30 to $50 as opposed to the mid-teens. Bodega Volver, a joint project between Rafael Canizares and Jorge Ordonez, produces wines from three appellations, La Mancha, Alicante and Jumilla. Readers will need to take note of the nearly identical cuvees, some of which are made from organic grapes and others from non-organic grapes. That information is clearly marked on the labels. Slightly more expensive are the 2010 and 2009 Tarima Hill. These cuvees come from the winery's oldest vines (20 acres of ungrafted vines that were planted in 1935) planted on the highest elevations." "(100% monastrell, from vines that were reportedly planted between 1935 and 1970; malo in oak and then aged in French oak for 20 months): Opaque ruby. Powerful cherry and cassis aromas are brightened by suave mineral, star anise and floral elements. Intense dark berry flavors are pleasantly bitter and surprisingly lithe, with spice and violet pastille notes adding interest. Gains sweetness and depth on the subtly tannic, very long finish, which leaves smoky mineral and floral notes behind." (IWC)

romanico ANOTHER LAWC WINE BARGAIN!
100% Tinta de Toro

2010
Bodegas Teso la Monja
Romanico
Toro

"The 2010 Romanico (100% Tinta de Toro aged in 100% new French oak for six months) exhibits a sensational bouquet of licorice, unsmoked cigar tobacco, blackberries and cassis. Full-bodied, smoky, rich, complex, big and dense without being heavy or awkward, this beauty will drink well for 5-7 years. These are two extraordinary wines produced by the Eguren family in the province of Zamora in Toro. Readers who love full-flavored, robust, exuberant red wines will adore these two 2010s. " (WA)

"(100% tempranillo, raised in 100% new French oak and then aged for six months in more new oak): Saturated ruby. Vibrant raspberry and candied cherry on the nose, with strong oak-spiciness and a kiss of smoky mocha. Rich but vibrant, offering intense red berry flavors and a floral quality on the clinging finish." (IWC)

borsao ANOTHER LAWC WINE BARGAIN!
70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.

2009
Bodegas Borsao
Berola
Campo De Borja

"The 2009 Berola is a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Some oak enters the picture here, as this cuvee is aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels for about 14 months. There are 1,400 cases of this serious red. While priced nearly twice as high as some of its siblings, this is a hefty, rich, impressive wine that will drink well for 7-8 years. Abundant notes of black currants, black cherries, licorice, flowers, vanillin and spice box are found in the aromas and flavors of this medium to full-bodied, silky, well-endowed wine. Unbelievable!" "(70% garnacha, 20% syrah and 10% cabernet sauvignon, aged in French and American oak): Deep ruby. Pungent, smoky aromas of dark berry preserves, cherry pit and licorice, with a spicy element building with air. Broad and fleshy, offering velvety cherry and blackcurrant flavors and a touch of succulent herbs. The gripping, gently tannic finish clings with very good tenacity and focus." (IWC)

avante ANOTHER LAWC WINE BARGAIN!
100% Tinto Fino

2011
Bodegas Avante
Tineta
Ribera del Duero

"The grapes from this vineyard are used in the 2011 Tineta (100% Tinto Fino). It reveals a deep ruby/purple color as well as copious notes of creme de cassis intermixed with hints of wood smoke and charcoal. Medium to full-bodied, juicy, succulent and sensual, it should drink nicely for 3-4 years. Not far from the beautiful cathedral city of Pedrosa de Duero in the province of Burgos on the northern bank of the Duero River is the Bodegas Avante. Their south-facing vineyards were planted between 1975 and 1985 in alluvial, gravel, sand and clay soils." (WA)

"(100% tempranillo, fermented in stainless steel and then aged in three-year-old barrels for seven months): Youthful purple. Intense aromas of blueberry, cherry liqueur, licorice and Indian spices. Lively, sweet and spicy in the mouth, with energetic black and blue fruit flavors underscored by zesty minerality. Notes of bitter chocolate and dark berries on a long, spicy and sharply focused finish." (IWC)
