Success Strategies for Colorado Nonprofits
July 2014
Greetings!

Thank you to everyone who attended Southwest Rural Philanthropy Days! It was a hugely successful conference that brought over 350 grantseekers, grantmakers, and local officials to Pagosa Springs to share ideas, network, and work collaboratively on regional issues.

A very special thank you to all the dedicated  SWRPD Steering Committee members who volunteered over 400 hours over the past year to plan this unique regional event. Especially the event co-chairs Mary Jo Coulehan from Pagosa Springs and Briggen Wrinkle from Durango. This conference would not have been possible without all their hard work, creativity, and passion for the sector.

Finally, thank you to the Town of Pagosa Springs and Archuleta County for your hospitality and welcoming us to your community. Pagosa Springs was a beautiful backdrop for this event. Between the Hot Springs Resort, the San Juan River, the views from Reservoir Hill and the delicious food from local restaurants like the Pagosa Baking Company - it's a wonder any work was accomplished!

Boettcher Foundation Roundtable on Friday

Even with all the distractions of play and beautiful landscapes, the nonprofits in Southwest Colorado work extremely hard to provide invaluable services and resources to their communities. Through the generous support of the philanthropic community in Colorado, nearly 600 grants totaling over $16 million was awarded to nonprofits over the past 5 years in this region. This support allows these deserving nonprofits to continue to make an impact on their communities. For more information and to view the interactive funding impact map, visit our website!

CHECK OUT OUR NEW FEATURE
A Warm Welcome to our New Staff!
CRC is thrilled to introduce our new staff who joined the CRC Team in June! Kelli and Jake bring unique skills to CRC and will be valuable in moving our programs forward!

Kelli Mowrey - Resource Coordinator

Kelli is passionate about international development, education, social justice, and Spanish and, because of this, has also spent a great deal of time volunteering throughout Latin America. Previously, Kelli worked at the Boettcher Foundation as a Scholarship Program Intern and as the Social Enterprise Intern for Youth on Record. Kelli earned her Master's degree in International Development with concentrations in Nonprofit Management and Latin America at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver (DU). In her free time, Kelli enjoys practicing yoga, reading, learning new languages, and traveling, especially to spend time with her fiancée's family in Honduras.

Jake Arnolds - Outreach Coordinator

Jake worked for 5 years as a bilingual investigator for the Colorado State Public Defenders. This experience contributed to his passion for social justice and provided him with an intimate knowledge of all of Denver's communities and neighborhoods, the challenges that they face, and the importance of building relationships among neighbors to create strong communities. Jake returned to graduate school in 2012, completing his M.A. in International Development at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver. As a Denver native, Jake enjoys skiing, camping, and hiking in the mountains and he and his wife share a deep passion for international travel.

Finding Funding for Main Street Revitalization

Many towns in rural America have a wealth of historic buildings and Main Street shops that symbolize the vibrant heart of the community. As municipal coffers dwindle and private enterprises relocate, Main Streets are often the first indicator of economic decline. Recent years have seen an increased effort to revitalize these downtown centers, with a focus on historic preservation, creative enterprise, and community pride. Check out just a few of the many resources available to develop and maintain a lively downtown space.
