NSHE Notes

January 19, 2016

Classes begin today as spring semester 2016 gets underway. I hope everyone was able to enjoy the holidays with friends and family and has renewed energy to start the new year.

One of our top priorities has always been to ensure a college education is affordable for Nevadans. I'm excited to see many of our students continue their college dreams through the Silver State Opportunity Grant. Nevada's first state-sponsored, need-based financial aid program, created by the 2015 Legislature, was a remarkable step forward in providing much-needed financial aid to college ready students who are prepared to go to school full time. I look forward to the program's continued success in the years ahead.

Spring also marks the time of year when prospective students take their first steps toward a college education. I encourage high school seniors, and current NSHE students, to get a head start and fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Completing the FAFSA is essential to receiving financial aid from the federal government, and state government, as well as our colleges and universities. Some financial aid awards are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis so the sooner students and their families can complete the form, the better.

In addition, new rules take place for the 2017-18 academic year with the application process starting earlier, on October 1.

I wish everyone a wonderful semester and continued success to our students. I also look forward to meeting the new students who are starting the process of joining us this fall.
