Season's greetings!

As 2014 is coming to an end, I want to wish you and your loved ones a joyous holiday season and a happy new year. The past 12 months have brought exciting times to the eight institutions within the Nevada System of Higher Education.

Our students have continued to excel. This fall, 106,790 students were enrolled in NSHE institutions, a two percent increase over last year's fall enrollment. As more students turned to public higher education to improve their lives, we're also proud to see them leave as successful graduates. For instance, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and University of Nevada, Reno celebrated winter commencements this month, awarding more than 3,400 degrees. Earlier in the year, more than 9,000 students throughout the state earned degrees and certificates from our institutions at their spring commencements.

We also made a stronger investment in our community colleges and workforce development when Frank Woodbeck joined NSHE as our executive director for the Nevada College Collaborative. Frank has been making great strides in working with the presidents and staff of the College of Southern Nevada, Great Basin College, Truckee Meadows Community College and Western Nevada College to lead a new System-led initiative that focuses on helping our state's community colleges work together and share services to build more sustainable budgets. This team has also been strengthening NSHE's efforts toward better alignment with the state's workforce and economic development plan.

In addition, we bid farewell to Don Snyder who took the reins of UNLV while a national search was conducted for a new president. We look forward to Dr. Len Jessup joining our leadership team as UNLV's 10th president next month.

Going into the new year, we'll see some other leadership changes within NSHE. I want to thank regents Robert J. Blakely, Ron Knecht, and Dr. Jack Lund Schofield as their service on the Board comes to an end. I'm looking forward to working with our newest Board members, Trevor Hayes and Sam Lieberman.

I'd like to thank our students, faculty and staff for their continued dedication to Nevada's public education system. Your accomplishments have been a source of inspiration for me.

May you have a wonderful, safe and happy holiday season!
