Greetings!
I just wanted to say thank to everyone who came out for two great events over the past week: our 2nd annual Summer BBQ and our STEM Academy Grand Opening. The BBQ event was great but what happened with the Grand Opening of the STEM Academy is truly spectacular. Ten years of hard work in building our STEM programs in Region 2000 have culminated in a school that will produce our next generation STEM workforce for the employers in Region 2000. I cannot say thank you enough to each of you for supporting our work in opening this school!

Governor McDonnell Cuts Ribbon at XLR8 STEM Academy
|

Governor Bob McDonnell visited Central Virginia Community College today to watch a 2009 campaign promise come to fruition. The governor attended the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for XLR8 STEM Academy, Virginia's 16th STEM academy. With the school's opening, the number of STEM academies in the Commonwealth has now doubled from January 2010, fulfilling a promise made by then-candidate Bob McDonnell while on the trail four years ago. XLR8 will launch this coming academic year on the campus of Central Virginia Community College in the AREVA Technology Center, which will provide students with access to lab equipment and classroom space.
XLR8 has been a joint effort by the Region 2000 Technology Council, Future Focus Foundation and Workforce Investment Board; Central Virginia Community College; the school divisions of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, Campbell and Lynchburg; and area business partners, including AMTI, AREVA, The Babcock and Wilcox Company, Centra, Delta Star and Wells Fargo. XLR8 compliments current regional K-12 STEM activities and workforce development initiatives. The goal of this institution is to help close the gap between education and industry and further the economic vitality of this region.
The STEM Academy curriculum will offer students an opportunity to learn in an innovative, engaging classroom where students will develop critical thinking skills through hands-on, project-based learning...

|
The Future Focus Foundation, the education foundation of Virginia's Region 2000 Technology Council, announces a $5,000 grant by AREVA to support the Region 2000 Robotics Continuum programs. As a technology leader, AREVA has a deep understanding of the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education for the growth and development of industry.
"We are thankful for AREVA's support not only financially through this much needed grant, but also by providing many dedicated volunteers that have helped our programs grow and succeed year after year," said Elizabeth Narehood, Managing Director of the Future Focus Foundation.
"AREVA's employee volunteers share an enthusiasm for STEM education that is infectious to our youth participants. AREVA is truly making a difference in our community through the sponsorship of teams, equipment, events, and by sparking the imagination for our youth to continue to pursue their passions and build their dreams."
