Greetings!

Greetings. I do hope that you will be able to join us at our annual Christmas luncheon and business meeting on December 14. As we wind down 2012, we are already ramping up for 2013. We've accomplished so much together this past year with your help. There's so much to be thankful for and I look forward to recapping it with you. We'll also take time to reflect and share thoughts about the future of our organization. There are some things we have in store that you need to hear about, and we need to hear your thoughts on them as well. The food will be wonderful but the company will be even better. If I don't see you there then I wish you a Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year.

Jonathan Whitt, Executive Director

Nuclear Power Magazine Features Virginia's Region 2000 STEM Workforce Programs
nuclear power magazine

Our own Jonathan Whitt, Region 2000 Technology Council executive director, was recently featured in Nuclear Power International Magazine - describing the Lynchburg regional area's long term, broad-based commitment to invest in local STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education programs. Our regional initiatives are strongly positioning and preparing our students for a future in a workforce increasingly dominated by science and technology. All these programs are also priming the tech-focused workforce 'pipeline' - greatly benefiting local technology businesses as we raise up a new generation of well-equipped workers, innovators and marketplace leaders.

See below for an excerpt of Jonathan's article and read the entire text: here.

"Virginia's Region 2000 encompasses 2,000 square miles in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is home to a surprising number of high tech businesses, including two global nuclear companies - Areva and The Babcock and Wilcox Co.- employing nearly 4,500 in the area. Representatives from economic development, academia and government have seen the need to build and foster a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) ecosystem here, creating the workforce of the future and pointing students toward STEM careers which will continue to be in high demand in the future.

WDBJ7 Features Lynchburg Area STEM Academy
Elizabeth Narehood

Our Future Focus Foundation managing director Elizabeth Narehood was recently featured on news channel WDBJ7 talking about XLR8: Lynchburg Regional STEM Academy:

"Life after high school can be a scary time for teens, who are trying to figure out what kind of job to pursue.

In our changing economy, many career experts are pushing students toward the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math; referred to collectively as "STEM."

"Not only are they high growth in the number of jobs that are going to be offered, but they're also high growth in the amount of wages that are going to be available for students," said Elizabeth Narehood, managing director for the Future Focus Foundation at Virginia's Region 2000 Partnership.

To help students train for STEM jobs, school and industry leaders in Lynchburg are starting a new academy.  It will be a joint effort of the Region 2000 Technology Council and Future Focus Foundation, Central Virginia Community College, the school divisions of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, Campbell, and Lynchburg.

"It's going to be a great way to make our students career bound and career ready," said Narehood.
