By Cole Thaler, AVLF's Safe & Stable Homes Project Director
Imagine this: You've reached the end of your work day and you're heading home. You shut down your computer, grab your briefcase and umbrella, and head to your car. As you ease out of the parking garage and into Atlanta rush hour traffic, you start thinking about what's waiting for you at home. What do you have in the fridge for dinner? What veggies did you pick up at the grocery store last weekend? Should you splurge and order delivery? You make a mental note to throw a load of laundry into the washing machine before sitting down to eat.
Across town, Tabitha Jackson is also leaving work. She punches out and heads to the bus stop, glancing down MLK Jr. Boulevard with increasing impatience for the MARTA bus that seems to run later every day. She huddles under the bus shelter, leaning away from the splashes of cars passing through puddles, so the mud doesn't catch her uniform. There's no time to go to the laundromat tonight. When she's finally on the bus, she considers her dinner options. The refrigerator conked out again last week. Her landlord has promised three times to fix it, but he hasn't done so yet. She makes a mental note to stop at the gas station on the corner by her house to pick up some microwave dinners, even though their prices are too high and she worries about the sodium. READ MORE

PurSHOEing Justice: A Smashing Success! Our 3rd Annual PurSHOEing Justice was held February 10 at King & Spalding. The party was a fundraiser for the Safe Families Office, Georgia's only lawyer-staffed, courthouse-based walk in clinic for survivors of intimate partner violence. More than 275 guests nibbled on hors d'oeuvres from Coast2Coast Catering as they shopped for shoes (including 25 pairs of Louboutins donated by Iris Data Services) and handbags from Jeffrey Atlanta, jewelry from Stella & Dot and Segal Silver, cosmetics and skincare from BeautyCounter, and drank signature cocktails courtesy of United Distributors. The event's guest of honor, Fulton County Assistant District Attorney April Ross, spoke about the importance of educating women about domestic abuse. Thanks to April, 501 Auctions, and AVLF's many friends, the event raised nearly $45,000!

On February 2, AVLF's Safe & Stable Families Project staff attorneys Jamie Perez and Nilu Abdi-Tabari met with members of the family law bar of the Atlanta legal community. Supported by and guided by the presence and comments of Fulton Superior Court Family Division Judges Lane, Markle, and Barwick, the group considered how private domestic relations lawyers could offer pro bono representation to domestic violence victims who, after securing a 12-month Protective Order, seek legal help with a divorce against their abuser, or a related legal claim.
The lunch meeting generated an earnest discussion and a tentative agreement about the best way for AVLF to launch a Family Law Program. Please look for details later this spring.
