Successes

Before Alice Snedeker of Duane Morris accepted her case pro bono, Ms. Doone was battling both breast cancer and terrible conditions in her rental home. Mold grew on the walls, termites infested the home, and electrical problems frightened Ms. Doone. The landlord made only cosmetic fixes. Then Alice stepped in. She made sure the landlord understood the severity of the problems and his tenant's fragile condition. Alice was able to negotiate a settlement of several thousand dollars, including waived rent. Ms. Doone and her caretaker son are now safely settled in a new home!

Mr. Michaels worked for a community organization that was purchased by a larger company. The new owners didn't bother to pay him on a regular basis. Fed up, Mr. Michaels filed a pro se lawsuit against his employer - but quickly realized he needed legal help to win. That's when Frank Virgin of Taylor English Duma stepped in. With Frank's pro bono assistance, Mr. Michaels was awarded more than $10,000 in back wages! Even better, Frank kept working on the case until every dollar was paid. Thanks for seeing this through to the end, Frank!

What should have been a simple negotiation for the return of a security deposit turned into half a year of intense litigation in state court for one Atlanta woman. Ably represented by Sarah Good and Wendy Godfrey of Bryan Cave, Ms. Josephs triumphed in the end: after months of discovery, the deadbeat landlords saw the writing on the wall, paid her $900, and dropped their bogus counterclaims for thousands of dollars. Thanks to the great lawyers at Bryan Cave!

THE 2015 "PERSEVERANCE PAYS OFF" AWARD goes to volunteer attorney Jason Reeves, who represented an unpaid housekeeper since 2012 and finally resolved the case this month. Ms. Rosemary's employer kept promising that her wages were forthcoming, but she got nothing except bad checks.  Jason filed a lawsuit, but the defendant used every stalling tactic in the book, stretching the case out for years. Finally, the Court granted Jason's motion for summary judgment, awarding more than $19,000 to Ms. Rosemary. Jason, your perseverance is a testimony to your commitment to your clients. Thank you for sticking it out and winning big!

Introducing Libby King

We are thrilled to announce that Libby King is AVLF's new Development Director. (Don't worry - Carey Kersten hasn't gone anywhere. She just slid into the Marketing Director role.) Libby is originally from Columbus, GA, and has served the Atlanta community for almost 17 years. Previously, she was Director of Institutional Advancement at Atlanta Technical College. Prior to this, she raised funds for ovarian cancer research and served in fundraising and community outreach roles at Visiting Nurse|Hospice Atlanta. She was a communications assistant in the Office of Governor Roy E. Barnes after graduating from Clemson University with a B.A. in Political Science.

We are all delighted to welcome Libby. We have ambitious financial goals stemming from our recently adopted strategic plan, and we are thrilled to have the assistance of such a sophisticated, experienced fundraiser!

Jones Day Victory in Court

AVLF offers a huge thank you to Jones Day attorneys Meredith Kincaid and Will Rooks. On November 23, 2015, the two represented a domestic violence client in her hearing to extend her 30-day protective order for 12 months. They hit a lot of bumps along the way on the day of the hearing, including learning that the judge would not accept consent orders without both parties being represented (the respondent was not represented), having to delve deeper into the family law arena when the judge asked them to prepare a parenting plan modifying the extremely flexible plan the parties had mediated (without attorneys) in their prior divorce, finally completing the stricter parenting plan to find that the court had adjourned for the day and they were locked out of the courtroom, making multiple visits to a family division judge to have the final order and parenting plan signed, and e-filing the final order themselves, since the domestic violence courtroom clerk was no longer available to them. Whew!

After nine long hours in court and a comedy of roadblocks along the way, these two dedicated attorneys walked out with a victorious client who not only obtained a much-needed 12-month protective order, but also a parenting plan that was much clearer and better suited for her. Well done, Meredith and Will, and thank you!

Board Member Spotlight: Amelia Medina

Amelia Rawls Medina is part of the Special Matters & Government Investigations Practice Group at King & Spalding, Incoming President of the AVLF Junior Board of Directors, and this month's Spotlight.

How did you get involved with AVLF?
I attended a pro bono training program hosted at King & Spalding by the former head of the Safe Families Office, Liz Whipple. She was fantastic! I soon learned her infectious enthusiasm for AVLF is a common attribute of the staff.

What is your favorite AVLF moment?
I have too many to count, but one sticks out in my mind right now. I was representing a young woman client who was being stalked by a gentleman in her apartment complex and needed a temporary protective order to ensure her safety. The police officer who responded to the scene of a 911 call the client had made was a key witness for our side, but he was extremely acrimonious and unhelpful at the beginning of the case. According to this officer, he had never had a positive experience interacting with lawyers, and the last thing he wanted to do was spend time outside of his regular work hours in prep sessions with me. I slowly won him over, though (relying on a few tips from the Safe Families Office along the way!) - and at the end of an exhausting half-day prep session, he said I had convinced him that lawyers "weren't so bad after all." He also offered that if my client or I ever needed him again, we should not hesitate to contact him. This experience with AVLF was a reminder to me of how important it is for us to develop allies (whether in law enforcement, the court system, other nonprofit organizations, etc.) at the same time that we zealously represent our clients. You never know when you might need them! READ MORE
