Members of the Family Law Committee of the Young Lawyers Division of the State Bar of Georgia hosted the 10th Annual Supreme Cork wine tasting and silent auction at 5 Seasons Westside on Thursday, October 22.This year's Supreme Cork raised nearly $10,000 for AVLF's Guardian ad Litem Program and the Safe Families Office. Successes

ILLEGAL EVICTION ALERT! Around Christmas, Ms. Walsh fell behind in her rent. While she worked hard to scrape up the money, her landlord filed eviction papers. But instead of following the legal process, he broke the law by putting her things outside on his own. Ms. Walsh came home to discover her belongings on the grass, with many items stolen. Taylor Tribble of Huff Powell & Bailey demanded that the landlord compensate Ms. Walsh for her damages. They settled the case for $5,000, nearly 10 times her monthly rent!.

Trent Shuping of Warshauer Law Group represented Ms. Francis, an 89 year old woman whose apartment was infested with bedbugs. She moved in with her daughter for a week to allow her landlord to treat the infestation, but when she returned it was even worse than before. Ms. Francis suffered health problems and property damage. Trent filed a lawsuit and served discovery, and the case settled for a significant cash payment to Ms. Francis - allowing her a measure of justice and comfort in her later years.

Winetasting Countdown: 1 Week to Go!

There's still time for you to join us and 1,000 of your friends at the 24th Annual AVLF Winetasting on Thursday, November 5 at 6pm at the Georgia State University College of Law.

One note about the event: we strongly encourage our guests to use MARTA and exit at Peachtree Center. If you choose to drive, the Georgia-Pacific parking lot will be open until 10pm. (Thanks to the legal department of GP for making this possible!) The entrance to the GP garage is at 60 John Wesley Dobbs Avenue. This will be paid parking - the maximum charge is $14.

For further details, including including a list of the wines, all sponsors, parking/transportation information and how to register, please visit avlfwinetasting.org. Hope to see you there!

Goodbye, Julia! Welcome, Nilu!

In a few short days, we will say goodbye to Julia Black. Julia and her new husband are leaving us for the greener pastures of North Carolina, where he will be the new Assistant Director of the Law Library at the North Carolina Central University School of Law and she will search for her next great adventure. Julia has been an essential part of the success of the Safe Families Office for years and an important thread in the fabric of the Foundation's staff. We will miss her!

Julia leaves us in very capable hands. We feel extremely fortunate that Nilu Abdi-Tabari (pictured right, with Julia on the left), with whom we have worked closely through our partnership with PADV, has stepped right into the DV Project Coordinator position. The transition is proving to be seamless, as both of these talented women are working to assure the continued delivery of high quality legal service to victims of intimate partner violence. Welcome Nilu!

Board Member Spotlight: Jennifer Jackson

Jennifer Jackson, AVLF Board Member and PurSHOEing Justice co-founder, is this month's Spotlight. We're so lucky to have her in our corner!

How did you get involved with AVLF? I first learned about AVLF about 8 years ago via the Domestic Violence Project and was hooked. When I met Marty Ellin, I knew I had to do whatever I could to further the efforts of AVLF and I have been joyfully involved since that time.

What is your favorite AVLF moment? Earlier this year at our PurSHOEing Justice, it was amazing to hearing Christy Sims, an Atlanta-area domestic violence survivor, share how she overcame the domestic violence incident that forever changed her life. (We'll have another amazing guest speaker this upcoming February at the 3rd annual event. Join us!) AVLF stood with Christy all along her journey. Recently, her abuser was convicted in criminal court. READ MORE

#3everyday

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Longtime AVLF friend and local artist Jessica Caldas has started #3everyday, a month-long project named for the fact that three women die every day from domestic violence. The project consists of a daily, three-woman performance piece based on the movements of women preparing to leave their homes.

Performances are held daily at varying locations throughout Atlanta and include a takeaway print and information about how bystanders can engage more deeply with domestic violence prevention, awareness, and education. For more information, visit #3everyday on Facebook and at jessicacaldas.com/. Jessica, you continue to amaze and inspire us!
