Congrats!

AVLF Development Director Carey Kersten and Board Member Avi Stadler were married at Wolf Mountain Vineyards in Dahlonega on May 24. Marty Ellin served as officiant. Congratulations to the newlyweds!

AVLF congratulates everyone who passed the February 2015 Georgia bar exam, and we remind each of you that pro bono is a wonderful way to develop legal skills while giving back to your community.

Successes

BAIT AND SWITCH! Mr. Hatcher's landlord showed him a lovely apartment. But after Mr. Hatcher signed the lease, the landlord gave him the keys to a dilapidated unit with a bug infestation. Mr. Hatcher moved out after three days, but the landlord refused to return a dime. Volunteer attorney Angela Waldrop took the case, sued the landlord, and won a judgment for over $3,500. Angela, thanks for sticking with this case and winning justice for Mr. Hatcher!

DID YOU KNOW landlords cannot keep security deposits to cover ordinary wear and tear? When Tanya Thomas's landlord refused to return her $1,000 security deposit, he told her it was because she didn't mow the front yard before moving out! Volunteer attorney Kelly Walsh of Schreeder, Wheeler & Flint called him to explain the law - but he hung up on her. Kelly was forced to file a lawsuit, and the Magistrate Court awarded the entire security deposit to Ms. Thomas. Kelly, thank you for teaching that landlord a lesson!

Big Win: Bad Landlord Loses in Three Courts

In 2013, Susan and her boyfriend, Juan, rented a home in South Fulton. A few months later, Susan was hospitalized, and Juan stayed with friends nearby so he could visit her frequently. When Susan was released, she and Juan returned to the home, only to discover that their landlord had turned off the water, changed the locks, and pawed through their belongings. READ MORE

Board Member Spotlight: Sarah Zampell

Sarah Zampell (pictured left with Laurice Rutledge Lambert) has been the AVLF Junior Board President since 2013. In addition to having the neatest handwriting this office has ever seen, she has played a huge role in the success of all three annual AVLF/ALAS Beer Tasting Fundraisers.

Quick snapshot (name, education, job history, etc.): Sarah Leopold Zampell, St. Lawrence University, B.A. with honors in history (2000); Emory University School of Law (2005); I was an associate with Holland & Knight, LLP for seven years and left the practice in 2012 to stay home with my children.

What is your favorite AVLF moment? In connection with the Saturday Lawyers Program, I represented an elderly gentleman in his dispute with a car mechanic who had charged him repeatedly for repairs he never made. The car was also burglarized while in the mechanic's custody and control. My client at times lived in his vehicle and stored all of his possessions in it, so this was a really big deal. We ultimately prevailed after a 3 hour trial in night magistrate court. (What a tremendous experience for a young associate!) The next day, my client arrived at my office with a bag of fruit he had purchased at the train station with what little money he had as a thank you for my work - I will never forget it. READ MORE

AVLF in Texas, Y'all

Marty Ellin, Michael Lucas, and Liz Whipple represented AVLF at the American Bar's 2015 Equal Justice Conference held in Austin May 7 - 9. The conference's primary goal is to bring together the legal community to discuss equal justice issues as they relate to the delivery of legal services to low-income individuals. In between plenary sessions, AVLFers had fun with friends Cheryl Naja of Alston & Bird, Aileen Bleach of Sutherland, and Lisa Liang of Atlanta Legal Aid.
