Shelter from the Winter
by Cole Thaler, AVLF Director of Housing and Consumer Programs
On September 15, AVLF sponsored a screening of the documentary American Winter. Through the stories of eight families, the documentary vividly shows how one lost job can cascade into depleted savings, utility shutoffs, eviction, homelessness, hunger, and profound hopelessness.
The film follows one woman visiting a food bank for the first time. As a worker places food in her basket, the woman breaks down crying. She explains that she's never had to turn to a food bank before; the groceries will make a huge difference to her family. The worker hugs her, touches her hand, looks in her eyes. "You can help somebody another time," the worker says.
You can help somebody another time. Around and between the structures that perpetuate poverty - low wages, underfunded social services, tax credits that help only the wealthiest - human connections thrive. In American Winter, family members reach out to each other, literally and figuratively. When one husband suggests his wife move out of state to live with her family rather than face eviction, she tells him that she loves him enough to live outside in a tent with him in the winter. "Now that's love," he responds, his eyes full of sadness and gratitude.

PADV's Violence in the Workplace Conference - October 8, 2014
Each year, Partnership Against Domestic Violence hosts a conference for the business community to educate and collaborate with companies in understanding and combating domestic violence in the workplace. The CDC estimates that losses in work productivity equals well over $700 million each year. This year's conference is at the State Bar, and includes two legal sessions aimed at attorneys and law firms particularly.
"The Legal Implications for Companies Addressing Violence in the Workplace" will feature AVLF board members Dena Hong of UPS and Rebecca Shanlever of Hall, Arbery, Gilligan, Roberts & Shanlever LLP, as well as Cheryl Legare of the Buckley Law Firm LLC and Laura Bogan of Home Depot. "Pro Bono & Beyond: A Call to Action and Volunteer Opportunities for Attorneys" will be presented by AVLF's Liz Whipple and Kate Gaffney of Atlanta Legal Aid Society, Cobb County Office.
The event qualifies for 3 general CLE credits, and should provide an interesting perspective for attorneys on how to best serve their employees as well as their employers in uniquely challenging circumstances. For more information or to register, visit PADV's website.

New AVLF Board Member: Kinshasa Williams
Whether she's providing pro bono legal aid for pregnant teens, or advocating accessible health care and reproductive justice for women, Kinshasa K. Williams, a healthcare attorney, is typically at work on behalf of other people. And law is not the first career in which she's championed those who lack access. Before going to law school, she was an Epidemiologist with the Louisiana Office of Public Health and with the United States Department of Health and Human Services, working to achieve higher standards of care in Louisiana's family planning clinics.
Says Marty Ellin, AVLF Executive Director, "We are delighted that Kinshasa Williams has joined the AVLF Board of Directors! Kinshasa is a rare combination of talents: she is a first rate advocate, has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to public interest legal work, and she has real expertise in matters of specific interest to an important segment of the AVLF client community." Welcome, Kinshasa! READ MORE |
