A Devotional Life

 A Devotional Life

Throughout Advent, we will read and reflect upon the same scripture. These devotions have been written by many different members of our church family.

Mark 1:1-8

"He proclaimed, 'The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.'" (Mark 1:7-8)

John was a prophet.  Isaiah described him as preparing the way for the Lord long before John was born.  In reading this collection of devotionals, you too are preparing the way.  At the very least you are preparing your own heart, and maybe those around you.  Advent is all about preparation.  Not so much about gifts, decorating, and partying, not even Jesus' birth, but about letting Jesus in.  It's very easy to allow the Christmas season to get away from us, and to leave too little time to do the important work of preparation.  May you be blessed by setting aside enough to read the scripture and reflect on it with just a week until Christmas Eve!

Now John and Jesus were about the same age and yet John started his ministry of calling those around Jerusalem to repentance some time before Jesus started his ministry.  It seems John's ministry was well-established when Jesus comes on the scene.  John met Jesus before either of them was born according to Luke who tells us John "leaped" in his mother's womb when Mary greeted Elizabeth soon after she learned she was pregnant.  In the verses that follow this text, Jesus comes to see John and be baptized, and we see John slip into the background as Jesus starts his ministry.  In Matthew 3:14 we are told John resists, but Jesus insists, and in doing so gives us the sacrament of baptism.  The gospels vary in the way and the timing, but they all agree that John steps aside as Jesus takes center stage.

Pray with us: Lord, grant me balance; to prepare home and family for the coming holiday, while leaving time to listen to You calling. May I set aside the demands of the world, and make myself available to You.

A Worshipful Life

Advent Series:   "The Gifts of God"

Sermon Title:     "The Joyfully Given Gift"

Our final week of Advent will celebrate in lessons and carols the advent of our Lord, Jesus Christ.  The focus of the year's choral presentation will be on the communion God desires to share with us.  Indeed, the incarnation of Jesus Christ is more than God's method of saving us from sin; it is His means to have the most intimate communion yet with His creation.  We will joyfully sing about this new friendship we have with God through His Son, Jesus Christ.

An Advent-ful Life
Each week in Advent will bring a different experience to Center Church worship.
  • December 21st brings us together again with one worship service for the Annual Musical Presentation.  What a wonderful way to lead us up to Christmas Eve.
  • Candle light Christmas Eve Worship will be at 7:30 and 11:00 pm.  The Sacrament of the Lord's Supper will be celebrated at both services.
A Servant's Life
Upcoming Events
  • Don't forget to stop by the C-Mail table to pick up cards left for you by your Center Church friends.
  • On your way out of the church, stop by the library and check out the crèches we have on display.  These have been donated to us for the season.  A card by each indicates the owner and any story associated with it.

  • Pastor's Christian Ed Evening - beginning on Monday, January 12 and recurring weekly, Rev. Jeff Schooley will lead a review of the book How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth and discuss both why and how we read the Bible. This study of the Bible (that will also contain Bible study) is a great primer or refresh course for anyone who is asked to lead a Bible study or just answer questions about the Bible. The group will meet at 7 p.m. and last 60-90 minutes. Copies of the book can be ordered through the church at the low cost of $10. Please make your order soon.
  •  Gavin Walton, second-year student at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and (more dubiously) close friend to Pastor Jeff will provide pulpit supply on Sunday, December 28 while Jeff, Brianne, and River are out of town visiting family for Christmas. Kindness to our guest preacher is appreciated, though you can rib him about his height (ßJeff wrote this)
  • Pastor Joe's 100th birthday celebration following 11 a.m. worship on Sunday, January 11th in the Dining Room. Cake, refreshments, and celebration will all be present in spades.
