January 2016
Dear (Contact First Name),

Greetings!

For over a decade I have been presenting and training on the 3-5-7 Model© and, wow, have we come a long way! While the original version of the model is solid, we have learned so much since we began and while we may be nostalgic for the "old days", we wouldn't for a second go back.

We have learned from our partnering programs that it takes a sustained commitment over time to truly understand and integrate the 3-5-7 Model© framework into practice.  The 3-5-7 Model© of 2016 includes programming that is more effective in clarifying, integrating and actualizing the model within organizations for long lasting impact of systems change at all levels.  We have developed and refined several tools that take the guess work out of practice and that assist workers in using the directional approach that the 3-5-7 Model© provides. In 2016 our programming is better at ensuring that the 3-5-7 Model© is consistently utilized with fidelity and we are continually refining our system of coaching and mentoring to support programs and individuals.

In this issue, we will highlight our tools:
  • 3-5-7 Model© Readiness Curriculum
  • 3-5-7 Model© Workbook
  • 3-5-7 Model© Skills Development Guide
  • 3-5-7 Model© Evaluation and Outcome Tools
We know that many of you are using these in your practice but those of you who were trained in the more distant past may have missed out.  If any of these tools are unfamiliar to you then we invite you to get to know the 3-5-7 Model© in 2016!  Let's join together in 2016 with a re-commitment to helping children, youth and families to grieve their losses and to build and rebuild relationships.

The Readiness Continuum
The 3-5-7 Model© Readiness Continuum is a decision-support tool that is used to understand and further guide the work of the youth in Clarification, Integration and Actualization.  The 3-5-7 Model© Readiness Continuum provides an organized framework by which workers can evaluate their observations and understanding of the youth's experiences. Using the 3-5-7 Model© Readiness Continuum tool, workers determine at which points within the 3 Tasks and 5 Conceptual Questions the youth appears to be located.  Use of the tool allows workers to make sessions with the youth more purposeful and meaningful, and provide a directional approach.  Identifying where the youth is in the process of resolving grief and re-building relationships allows workers to select activities and experiences to offer that are most likely to enhance and support the youth's evolution to the next task.

The  3-5-7 Model© Workbook
The 3-5-7 Model© Workbook: Activities at a Glance is used to match potential activity selections with the identified Readiness Continuum location (the Activities at a Glance was recently revised to better support activity selection).  The worker prepares to introduce the activity to the youth, and using the 7 Skills, facilitates the process of the youth's work.  The responsiveness of the youth (their level of engagement) assists the worker in determining if the selected activity was aligned with the youth's Clarification, Integration and Actualization needs.  When the youth is engaged in the activity, the process of selecting activities and engaging the youth continues with each session.
The 3-5-7 Model© Skills Development Guide
The 3-5-7 Model© Skills Development Guide is a tool that further defines and brings clarity to the 7 Skills.  The guide is used to support the development of worker skills-a necessary component of fidelity.  The tool is comprised of 27 items that describe the 7 Skills on a continuum from Lacking to Strong.  The tool can be used as self-report or observation measure, and the data collected from the tool identifies additional training and coaching needs for workers.

The 3-5-7 Model© Evaluation and Outcomes Tools
We have developed several tools that support evaluation and outcome data collection.  Our friends at University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) led the development of a fidelity system, and plans are underway to produce training and instructional materials for the system.  We have identified several psychometrics that can also be used to determine the impact of the 3-5-7 Model©.  Our friends in Delaware have worked throughout 2015 to develop a collection tool that tracks several  data elements linked to 3-5-7 Model© work.  If your program is interested in evaluation and outcome measurement, contact us to explore how we might support your effort by building on the foundation we have created.
Know and use today's 3-5-7 Model©!  If you had training prior to the development of the Skills Development Guide get in touch with us to learn about all our tools and resources.
