Gold Star Gala Raises $275,000
| Celebrity auctioneer 13WHAM's Doug Emblidge helped guests establish 48 scholarships during this year's Gold Star Gala. |
The MCC Foundation hosted the 18th Annual Gold Star Gala, Curiouser & Curiouser, A Wonderland Experience presented by M&T Bank, at The Country Club of Rochester on Saturday, April 30. The event was a great success thanks to the combined efforts of many generous supporters, including Honorary Chairs Lauren Dixon, Mike Schwabl, Lori
Van Dusen and Ron Boillat, as well as Committee Chairs Catherine and Gary '76 Squires. We tip our hat to exceptional auctioneer Doug Emblidge!
The club was transformed into a whimsical wonderland and guests enjoyed performances by talented MCC student musicians and aspiring MCC actors. Our thanks go to the planning committee and all who helped to make the Gala a success, including underwriters M&T Bank, Dixon Schwabl, LVW Advisors, Manning Squires Hennig and the Louis S. and Molly B. Wolk Foundation. The Gold Star Gala raises important unrestricted funds for vital scholarships for deserving students.

Thank You for Empowering Lisa's Dream
On June 4 at Commencement, MCC will celebrate the success of nursing student Lisa Denmark (pictured at left) and more than 2,340 of her fellow graduates. MCC Foundation supporters played an important role in her success story.
A Wolk Faces of the Future and Alvin F. & Ruth K. Thiem Foundation scholar, Lisa is ready to start her second career as a registered nurse at Strong Memorial Hospital. A wife and mother, Lisa came to MCC to earn a nursing degree to complement her bachelor's degrees in chemistry and biology. Her goal is to become a community health nurse practitioner where her expertise in molecular biology and nursing will result in excellent care for her patients while researching ways to improve health and quality-of-life outcomes. Lisa was accepted into the University of Rochester's elite RN to BS to MS program in the family nurse practitioner track.
Scholarships and other national and community awards enabled Lisa to balance life at home, work, and MCC. Philanthropic support enabled her to work fewer hours in order to become president of MCC's Student Nurses Association and research the diversity of nursing workforce which she presented at Scholars' Day 2016.

First STAR Power Scholarships Awarded
| The STAR Power Initiative began with women accepting a challenge to help more single mothers pursue higher education. |
In 2013, the women of the MCC Foundation's Board of Directors answered a challenge from the Thompson Family to raise $100,000 in support of MCC students. They met that challenge in three months and were inspired to start a scholarship of their own to help single mothers achieve their educational dreams at MCC. STAR Power was born.
Since then, dozens of other women in the Rochester community have joined them in support of this initiative and $130,000 has been raised to date to establish the STAR Power Endowed Scholarship Fund at MCC. This spring, the first scholarships were awarded to four remarkable single mothers supporting and caring for children while going to school.
"Having a women's giving initiative at MCC has been a dream of mine for years," shares Kathleen Pavelka '79, co-chair of the STAR Power Leadership Committee. "My colleagues on the Foundation Board jumped at the chance to help single moms carve out a better future for their families."
