Nominations Open for the MCC Alumni Hall of Fame!

Do you know a former MCC student whose commitment to professional and personal excellence, community service and MCC/MCC Foundation would inspire current students? If so, please nominate him or her for the MCC Alumni Hall of Fame!

Nominees will be notified of their candidacy by letter and will be asked to complete a simple questionnaire. The MCC Foundation Alumni Committee will select up to four inductees this fall. This year's inductees will be honored at the MCC Foundation's 27th Annual Salute to Excellence celebration on November 17 at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center, and a plaque with their picture and background will be prominently displayed in the alumni corridor at the College's Brighton Campus.

Xerox & Connors and Ferris, LLP Host Dreamkeepers Event

Mike Zimmer (Xerox Corporation) and Greg Connors (Connors and Ferris, LLP) generously hosted a dinner for friends and colleagues at Oak Hill Country Club in November in support of Dreamkeepers, the College's new emergency aid program.

Dreamkeepers offers micro-grants of less than $500 to financially-struggling MCC students faced with unexpected emergencies, such as a flat tire or broken furnace. All too often financial challenges like these force students to drop out of school and struggle to make ends meet. Dreamkeepers assistance is paid directly to the vendor, such as an auto-repair shop, and recipients are required to take a financial literacy course. Already we can celebrate the program's success - 100 percent of the students who received Dreamkeepers assistance completed their semester at MCC!

MCC Dreamkeepers was made possible by a leadership gift of $50,000 from Robin '80 and Timothy '80 Wentworth. This generosity inspired Mr. Zimmer and Mr. Connors to partner in support of the initiative, pledging to match the Wentworth's commitment to support financially-struggling students striving to complete their education - and they are already 75% toward their goal, raising just over $37,000. The Xerox Foundation has also pledged $50,000 to support the program.

Alumnus Salva Dut Visits MCC

I am helping my people because of the education I received here. -- Salva Dut
On Friday, March 18, MCC welcomed hundreds of local middle school students and live-streamed to thousands more in 281 schools from over 35 states and countries including China, Honduras, England, and Hungary - for a conversation with Water for South Sudan, Inc. founder Salva Dut '00 and Linda Sue Park, the children's author who chronicled his story as a Sudanese Lost Boy in A Long Walk to Water.

Salva, a member of MCC's Alumni Hall of Fame, builds wells in South Sudan to help communities grow and children go to school instead of walking hours in search of water. Inspired by Salva's life story, students learn the importance of clean water and raise money for Water for South Sudan. More than $1 million has been raised by readers to date in support of Salva's work.
National Poetry Contest Named in Memory of MCC Alumna Anna C. Price

The MCC Foundation was proud to offer a $2,500 scholarship to the Children's Writer's Guild (CWG) to help create a nationwide poetry contest named in memory of MCC alumna Anna C. Price.  Anna was a writer, musician, actress, and artist, and daughter of author and CWG contributor Marjorie Baker Price. Anna passed away in 2014 at the age of 37, but during her life she accomplished a great deal artistically and academically. She was also a loving and devoted mother, wife, daughter, sister, and friend to many.

Her first poetry anthology, Peripheral Blues in Static, was published when Anna was 15 and reveals a depth of thought well beyond her years. While a student at MCC, Anna presented her literary writings on gender issues at local and state academic symposiums and conferences. Additionally, she was a peer mentor and member of Rochester AmeriCorps.

After graduating with honors from MCC, Anna received a full scholarship to the University of Rochester. The CWG is proud to partner with the MCC Foundation in offering a $2,500 scholarship in her memory as part of The Anna C. Price Poetry Prize competition. Additional cash prizes will be awarded by CWG in distinct age groups and categories.
