WolkWolk Faces of the Future Announced

(Left to right) Louis S. and Molly B. Wolk Foundation trustee Dr. Alvin Ureles, scholarship recipient
Jonathan Jezioro, and Jeremy Wolk attend the Wolk Faces

of the Future Scholarship Announcement & Luncheon at the Brighton Campus in December.

The Louis S. and Molly B. Wolk Foundation announced the gift of $375,000 to establish the Wolk Faces of the Future Scholarship to help MCC students earn their associate in applied science degrees and become registered nurses.

The first 20 recipient, all nursing students from Monroe, Ontario and Wayne counties, have been named. The scholarship is open to full- or part-time students enrolled in MCC's nursing program who demonstrate potential for a successful career as a registered nurse.

MCC is one of the largest educators of registered nurses for Western New York, graduating approximately 130 students per year.  Year after year, 96 to 99 percent of MCC nursing program graduates pass the national licensing exam the first time they take it.  Students attend classes at the Louis S. and Molly B. Wolk Center for Excellence in Nursing at MCC - a facility made possible by a $2 million gift from the Wolk Foundation to the MCC Foundation in 2007.

ROCTo those who ROCed the Day for MCC, We Salute You!

The Monroe Community College Foundation participated in ROC the Day on Wednesday, December 11 and was overwhelmed by the support from the Rochester community.  This was the third year of this online day of giving and the MCC Foundation received a record $13,000 in contributions!  Our thanks to all who ROCed the Day in support of our terrific students!

FireRecipients of Chiapperini and Kaczowka Memorial Scholarships Selected

Monroe Community College students Matthew Speer (Greece) and Cory Thayer (Webster), pictured left, are the first recipients of the Lt. Michael J. Chiapperini and Tomasz M. Kaczowka Memorial Scholarship.  Both recipients plan to pursue careers as first responders, following in the footsteps of Chiapperini and Kaczowka, an MCC alumnus and student respectively.

The scholarship was launched earlier this year by Christine and Jim Wheeler (Naples, Fla., formerly of Webster) with the Monroe Community College Foundation to honor the memories of Chiapperini and Kaczowka-members of the West Webster Fire Department who lost their lives on December 24, 2012.

Nearly 40 individuals and groups from across the community joined the Wheelers and raised more than $40,000 to endow the scholarship. The Monroe County Fire Chiefs Association, led by President Mark Cholach, recently contributed $7,500 to help surpass the goal and endow the fund in perpetuity. As a result, two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to students in MCC's Fire Technology Program.

CFArea CrossFit locations support Chiapperini and Kaczowka Memorial Scholarships

Seven local CrossFit locations held a fundraiser on December 21 that raised over $4,700 for the Chiapperini and Kaczowka Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Led by CrossFit Park Avenue, members from CrossFit Fruition, CrossFit Rochester, CrossFit Boomtown, CrossFit CHG, CrossFit Paradigm Perfromance and Monroe County CrossFit donated $24 or more before completing their 24-minute workout routines.

Raising funds in memory of Lt. Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka was especially meaningful to CrossFit gyms members.  According to Allison Santoro, who helped organize the event, a significant percentage of the Crossfit membership is active or associated with first responders in our community.

CrossFit gyms offer a principal strength and conditioning program.  Members incorporate kettlebells, pull-up bars, and barbells into their workouts with other high explosive bodyweight movements that force the body to move the way it was designed to move.

SUNYSUNY Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service

SUNY is partnering with the New York State Commission on National and Community Service to help facilitate and deepen community engagement for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and retirees across New York. As both a kick-off and celebration of this new partnership, SUNY and the Commission will co-host a state-wide day of service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 20, 2014. There are 10 regional volunteer centers in the state-all near SUNY campuses, and they are run by New Yorkers Volunteer, which is the State Commission on National and Community Service. Multiple volunteer projects will occur simultaneously in each region and across the state, providing an opportunity for members of the SUNY family to join together in service, fostering vibrant communities.

In our region, the service event is 'KING FOR A DAY 2014' and is coordinated by the

AFSupport the 2013-2014 MCC Annual Fund

Giving students hope and a place to start is Why We're Here.

When you support the annual fund, you help bridge the gap between a student's resources and the cost of tuition.  Last year we provided nearly 700 scholarships to deserving students, including 20 new scholarships.  This year, with your help, we will grow our scholarship base even more.

Thank you for giving our students a chance to succeed!
