STARSTAR POWER!
Women Strengthen Thompson Scholarship to Support MCC Students and Families

Kerri Guzman (left) shares her story of how receiving a Thompson Family Endowed Scholarship changed her life and that of her mother and four children with MCC Foundation Director and STAR Power Chair Kathy Pavelka '79 at a STAR Power reception in May. Kerri's goal is to become a teacher and basketball coach.

More than 2,000 students who attend Monroe Community College each year are parents. As high as 30 percent of Damon City Campus students are single parents. Funds like the Thompson Family Endowed Scholarship managed by the Monroe Community College Foundation, make a significant difference, helping parents continue their studies at MCC while balancing the demands of work and family.

Inspired by a $100,000 matching gift pledge from John '64 and Mary Thompson, a group of MCC Foundation Directors launched the STAR Power Women's Giving Initiative in May at a reception hosted by MCC President Anne Kress. The initiative seeks to raise $20,000 per year over five years to secure the match and reinforce the fund that has touched the lives of nearly 900 students since 1995, mostly single parents. More than $100,000 has been raised to date!

By helping student-parents overcome financial barriers and complete their studies, the fund also impacts the lives of the students' children and strengthens the community. Each gift to the STAR Power Women's Giving Initiative brings the MCC Foundation closer to securing the matching gift and awarding more scholarships. Contact the MCC Foundation for more information or give online at www.monroecc.edu.
