LAWYERS IN LIBRARIES - Info & Resources

The Scarborough Public Library is hosting Law Day 2013, a free event open to the public. Volunteer lawyers will be at libraries across Maine to provide information on how to access civil legal resources and will offer brief consultations for attendees. Wednesday, May 1st (1:00 - 3:00 p.m.)

 

Law Day 2013 is organized and presented by the Maine Justice Action Group Collaboration on Innovation, Technology, and Equal Access to Justice which includes the Maine State Bar Association, Pine Tree Legal Assistance, Maine public libraries, the Volunteer Lawyers Project, the State of Maine Judicial Branch and other organizations committed to furthering the cause of access to justice.

WOMEN, WORK, & COMMUNITY - Lots to Learn Locally

Have you checked the Women, Work, & Community course offerings lately? Here are two happening close to home:

  • Career Planning: Finding Your Place in Today's Job Market. 9:00 a.m. - Noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 23rd - June 6th. (South Portland) Prepare for your next career or job with a plan that's right for you. In this class you will review your skills, interests, and experiences and relate them to occupations, identify educational opportunities, research the local job market, and develop a step-by-step plan to achieve your goals. Whether you are unemployed, underemployed, or considering a career change, this class will help you achieve employment success for today and tomorrow. Registration and more info...
     
  • My Money Works. 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Tuesdays, May 28th - June 25th. (South Portland) This 15-hour class can help you gain the skills and confidence you need to stretch your money, pay your bills, reduce debt, find money for savings, plan for retirement, and set personal financial goals. At the end of the class you will have a plan to achieve greater financial stability. A follow-up session is scheduled to provide additional networking and support. Registration and more info...

CAREER RESOURCES - Free Events for Job Seekers

The Portland CareerCenter is part of a statewide network offering a variety of free employment and training services. Here are couple of upcoming programs:

  • UP Networking Group. 8:30 a.m. - Noon every Tuesday. Provides support, job leads, networking, and complimentary tickets to area business meetings/functions. Each week a different topic for seeking employment is covered, either through hands on workshops or employers who come in to address the group on specific issues.
     
  • Job Seeking for the 50+ Worker. Friday, May 17th, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Sanford Community Adult Education Center. Are you seeking employment, re-employment, needing to work longer or supplement your income? Are you looking for ways to adjust to current economic trends, or considering phased retirement? Explore how agencies and services can help you with building ideas and strategies.
