HOUSING VOUCHERS - Waiting Lists Now Open

The Portland, South Portland, and Westbrook Housing Authorities will be accepting applications for housing vouchers this week: April 11 and 12. (9:00 a.m. - Noon and 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.)Please note that the applications are only to get on the waiting list for housing vouchers; there are currently no housing vouchers available. Applications to be put on the waiting list may be done by phone, but go in person if you are able.

SCARBOROUGH ADULT ED - Lots to Learn Locally

Have you checked the Scarborough Adult Ed course offerings lately? Here's one especially for teens:

  • Teaching Your Teen About Finances. Wednesday, April 24th, 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Learning how to manage money is an essential step towards taking control of life and achieving goals, and it's an important family topic. Explore key things teens need to know to live financially smart lives, share ideas on how to get started, and hear about useful resources.

CAREER RESOURCES - Free Events for Job Seekers

The Portland CareerCenter is part of a statewide network offering a variety of free employment and training services. Here are couple of upcoming programs:

  • UP Networking Group. 8:30 a.m. - Noon every Tuesday. Provides support, job leads, networking, and complimentary tickets to area business meetings/functions. Each week a different topic for seeking employment is covered, either through hands on workshops or employers who come in to address the group on specific issues.
     
  • Job Interviewing Workshop. Friday, April 26th, 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Explore interview preparation techniques and practice most commonly asked questions in an interview setting. Seating is limited - sign up today! 
     
  • Job Seeking for the 50+ Worker. Friday, May 17th, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Sanford Community Adult Education Center. Are you seeking employment, re-employment, needing to work longer or supplement your income? Are you looking for ways to adjust to current economic trends, or considering phased retirement? Explore how agencies and services can help you with building ideas and strategies.

Celebrate Earth Day by joining your neighbors for the annual clean up of Scarborough's natural treasures - our beaches and the Scarborough Marsh! Saturday, April 20th, 9 a.m. - Noon.There will be sites all around town - start by checking in at the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center on Route 9. Bring a friend or two (or more!) and join us!
  
The marsh is a nutrient-rich habitat that feeds many birds, mammals, fish, and more.... plus also people! This year Project G.R.A.C.E. is partnering with Friends of Scarborough Marsh and the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center on a non-perishable food drive as part of the clean up.
