What motivates you to be the best?
I often get asked by prospects and clients to give them the ‘secret ingredient’ that will help them get motivated or how to motivate their sales teams. I hear comments like, “Most of us know what we need to do, why don’t we just do it?” I chuckle when I hear this because we all know that the only person who can motivate us to do something is ourselves. It’s like going to the gym – friends and family can encourage and suggest that we go, however the ultimate decision lies with the individual.
So what is it that gets people motivated to do the behaviors required to have success in sales?

The Brutal Truth: My Score as a Sales Manager
Paul Downs is writing this week about his decision to hire a sales consultant for the New York Times.
The sales training began with evaluations. My three sales staffers and I were given a psychological profile test (DISC profile) and a test to gauge our attitudes toward selling. I was given an additional set of questions designed to reveal my capabilities as the sales manager.
Our Sandler Trainer also spent a morning with us listening in as we talked to clients on the phone.
A couple of weeks after the evaluations, I received a thick report with the results of all of the tests, both for me and for my staff. The good news is that we all had potential to be sales professionals, although some work would be involved. The bad news was that I scored a zero, literally, as a sales manager.
