Some of you might not be aware that my entre into the fine art business many years ago was via jewelry design. I apprenticed with a silversmith for a couple years in the 1970's as a teenager in Santa Fe, New Mexico, then got back into it 10 years later when I moved here to Southern California and enrolled in jewelry classes at Santa Ana College in the late 1980's. Through the people I met and experiences I had at SAC, I transitioned out of my aerospace job into the art business, working at different art galleries as salesperson/administrative assistant/installer, while also designing and making jewelry on a full time basis in my home workshop. I also met David Aeppli, owner of display and my current employer, at SAC (he was the gallery technician at the time) and we have been friends ever since.
The director of Coastline Community College's art gallery, David Michael Lee, invited me to be one of the artists in his upcoming show, titled MAKING/working. All the artists in this exhibit work in the local art industry in a capacity other than making art or teaching, but each of us has some type of creative output, outside of our regular jobs. In Lee's invitation letter to the artists, he states, "the common theme through this exhibition is that you help bring culture to this community and we would like to celebrate this." I will have a few examples of older work that demonstrates the nature of my work when making jewelry full time, and the rest of my display will be of more recent work that reflects the small blocks of time that I currently have for jewelry design.
This exhibit runs April 3 - 27, 2013.
Gallery Hours: Wed - Friday 12-4PM and Saturday, April 27, 12-4PM
I plan to be at the opening reception and invite you to join me there that evening. If you own any of my jewelry, I would be thrilled to have you wear it to the event.
