Jeff Guinn

Jeff Guinn became homeless on a spring day in 1997, and the week he spent living on the streets brought the city to a turning point.

His harrowing, personal story of street life was published by the Star-Telegram on June 8, 1997 and revealed critical gaps in homeless services: there were no shelters open during the day, no escape from heat or cold, no rest, no access to bathrooms, to laundry, showers or other services homeless men and women need to escape life on the street.

Fort Worth leaders were shocked and responded, opening the Day Resource Center in 1999.

Now you can revisit the story that started it all in the February issue of 360 West and whet an appetite for Jeff's appearance at the 7th annual Breakfast with the Mayor Friday.

 Chasing the blues away

Text a pledge to give & be seen at the big event

A sell-out crowd will chase the blues away Friday at the 7th annual Breakfast with the Mayor.

Can't make it? No problem. You can be seen at the big event even if you don't attend.

It's easy. Just have your smartphone handy from 7:30-9 a.m. Friday.

To pledge, prepare a text to 41444. This number is entered in the "To" field.

In the message, type the following. Be sure to separate each with a space.

  • DRC

  • The amount of your pledge

  • Your name

Your message will look something like this:

DRC $250 Jane Smith

Your pledge will not appear on your phone bill.

Instead, you'll receive a reply and link that lets you fulfill your pledge by credit card, all on your own smart phone.

Even better, you can see your gift acknowledged in real time, wherever life takes you Friday morning.
